ENVIRONMENT:

THE technical expertise of a highly meticulous & solutions-driven Electronics Engineer is sought to join the Joburg team of a provider of cutting-edge Electronics Solutions. Your role will entail experiments, tests or other physical and/or computer simulations of electronic and/or systems, where the tools, equipment and time provided is capable of determining the test outcomes. You will also utilize software such as DesignSparkPCB to generate schematics and PCBs if required to do so while compiling technical reports, technical studies, Quality Assurance documentation, procedures, bills of materials and master design files. Applicants must possess a B.ENG Electronic Degree with relevant work experience including Technical Writing; PCB Design; Embedded C Firmware Development; Android Development & Leadership ability – must be able to provide training when and if requested.

DUTIES:

• Product Quality Assurance. Testing and inspection of equipment to ensure manufactured or repaired equipment meets the company standards.
• Electronic PCB Repairs and troubleshooting. Studying and understanding schematics for the purpose of diagnosing a problem or fault.
• Experiments, tests or other physical and/or computer simulations of electronic and/or systems, where the tools, equipment and time provided can determine the test outcomes.
• Inspect and evaluate PCB and schematic designs produced by other team members for the purposes of quality control once trained to do so.
• Take instructions from the Research and Development Manager and Managing Director with regard to work that needs to be completed, including:
• Production of reports for activities undertaken by the company, where such information can be obtained from data, persons and storage systems present at the company.
• Inform the Research and Development Manager of the status of all tasks and activities assigned, at reasonable intervals, in relation to the tasks being undertaken.
• Record all tests taken in a manner where such information is reasonably accessible for other staff members of the company.
• Use the electronic design computer software DesignSparkPCB to generate schematics and PCBs if required to do so. (Skills and Proficiency dependent).
• Documenting including but not limited to, technical reports, technical studies, Quality Assurance documentation, procedures, bills of materials and master design files.
• Source and order components for projects.
• Ensure that all documents produced are stored in their correct locations on the server on the company internal network.
• Respond to instructions and requests for information sent via email or phone from employees and management, in a reasonably timeous manner.
• Produce embedded code and computer code for tasks as instructed, including programming embedded microcontrollers and computer systems. (e.g., Embedded C – Typically on Microchip PIC 12,16,18,32. Linux, Node.js, React). (Skills and Proficiency dependent).
• Use mechanical computer aided design packages, where available, for the generation of technical drawings. (Skills and Proficiency dependent).
• As far as is feasible, diagnose, debug, and interact with blast control systems in the field when required to do so, given the level of training currently exposed to.
• Interact with other employees in assisting the Research and Development team in the execution of projects, where possible.
• Assist with, as much as is reasonable, the maintenance of the telecommunications and network infrastructure of the company.
• On observation of systems that could be improved; including all aspects of production, administration, and development; direct such observations and suggestions to the responsible management persons.
• Request details from Quality Assurance and Research and Development regarding changes made to production processes and designs; and where appropriate recommend and compile the changelog for the changes.
• Facilitate meetings of the Research and Development team when required for the transfer of information with regards to team projects and activities.

REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications –

• B.ENG Electronic Degree from a University (no colleges or Btech) 

Experience/Skills –

• Technical Writing.
• PCB Design.
• Embedded C Firmware Development.
• Leadership ability – must be able to provide training when and if requested.

• Develop firmware in C/C++ for embedded microcontrollers (e.g., C2000, ESP32).
• Implement industrial communication protocols such as UART, CAN, RS485, Modbus.
• Integrate systems with cloud/local platforms using MQTT, HTTP, or proprietary protocols.

• Design low-voltage and high-voltage circuits (12V1000VDC).
• Develop power conversion systems (DC-DC, AC-DC) and battery management solutions.
• Select and design with power components (MOSFETs, IGBTs, gate drivers, etc.).
• Perform worst-case, thermal, and overcurrent analysis.
• Conduct EMI simulations and lab testing.
• Contribute to mechanical enclosure design, especially around thermal management.

• Build and test prototypes; integrate firmware and hardware.
• Develop automated test scripts (Python or C#) for validation.
• Support field installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.

• Work cross-functionally with mechanical, software, and production teams.
• Collaborate with clients, technicians, and suppliers.
• Maintain technical documentation and production files.

• BEng/BSc in Electronic, Electrical, or Mechatronic Engineering.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience in embedded systems and power electronics.
• Proficient in embedded C/C++ development.
• Comfortable with mid to high voltage systems (48V1000V).
• Knowledge of circuit protection and battery safety fundamentals.
• Experience using schematic and PCB design tools.
• Proficient with test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.).

The Senior Electronics Engineer will be responsible for designing, testing, and maintaining electrical equipment and systems. The job incumbent may be required to travel occasionally, as well as work overtime.

• Knowledge in scripting languages is a plus
• Familiar with software life cycles & processes
