The Employer is seeking a skilled and forward-thinking Environmental Engineer to lead initiatives that reduce the organisation’s ecological footprint, ensure environmental compliance, and drive innovative sustainability solutions across manufacturing operations. This role blends technical engineering expertise with strategic problem-solving, enabling you to design and implement projects that enhance efficiency, minimise waste, and meet – or exceed – regulatory and stakeholder expectations.

You’ll work closely with cross-functional teams, embedding sustainability principles into product design, production processes, and long-term development strategies, while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility throughout the organisation.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive Sustainability Management System for the organisation and subsidiaries.

• Integrate sustainability principles into engineering, product development, manufacturing, and policy .

• Design and implement technical solutions to improve resource efficiency and generate revenue from waste streams.

• Identify and secure government incentive schemes to support sustainability initiatives.

• Lead ESG and non-financial reporting , ensuring accuracy and transparency.

• Build strong relationships with government, municipal, and industry stakeholders to influence environmental practices and policies.

• Ensure full compliance with environmental and sustainability regulations, reducing legal and reputational risk.

• Analyse environmental performance data to identify improvement opportunities and measure progress.

• Promote environmental awareness and engage employees in sustainability-driven behaviours.

Minimum Requirements

• National Diploma / BSc / BTech in Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability Management, or related Engineering field.

• 5–10 years’ experience in the manufacturing industry.

• Minimum 3 years in a sustainability management, environmental engineering, or environmental leadership role in manufacturing, with a proven track record.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office .

• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills at all organisational levels.

• Proven analytical skills with innovative problem-solving ability.

• Experience with ISO 14001 , ESG reporting, and large-scale sustainability project design (including funding solutions).

• Ability to influence national and regional policy and legislation .

Desirable

• Knowledge of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation .

• Experience in water and effluent treatment technologies .

• Postgraduate qualification in Business Management/Administration.

The Environmental Engineer ensures compliance with environmental regulations while developing sustainable solutions for energy and petrochemical operations. The role focuses on minimizing ecological impact through waste management, emissions control, and environmental monitoring, while supporting the transition to cleaner energy systems. Key Responsibilities
1. Environmental Compliance & Permitting

• Ensure adherence toNEMA, NWA, and AQA regulations in South Africa.
• Prepare and submitEnvironmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) ,Waste Management Licenses (WML) , andAtmospheric Emission Licenses (AEL) .
• Maintain compliance withISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

• Design and optimizeeffluent treatment systems for refineries/petrochemical plants.
• Implementcarbon capture, flare gas recovery, and VOC reduction initiatives.
• Oversee hazardous waste disposal in line withSANS 10234 .

• Conductair/water/soil quality sampling and interpret lab results.
• Prepareannual environmental performance reports for NERSA/DWS.
• TrackGHG emissions using IPCC methodologies for carbon tax reporting.

• Developdecarbonization roadmaps aligned with company net-zero targets.
• Supportgreen hydrogen, biofuels, and circular economy projects.
• Conductlife cycle assessments (LCA) for new projects.

• Leadspill containment and remediation efforts.
• Investigate environmental incidents usingroot cause analysis (RCA) .

• BEng/BSc in Environmental/Chemical/Civil Engineering .
• PrEng/PrSciNat registration with ECSA/SACNASP (advantageous).
• Certifications:
  • NEBOSH Environmental Diploma.
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.
  • GHG Accounting Certification (e.g., GHG Protocol).

• Regulatory Knowledge: NEMA, NWA, AQA, and international standards (EPA, IFC).
• Modeling Tools: AERMOD (air dispersion), WATERGEMS (hydrology), SimaPro (LCA).
• Field Techniques: Stack emission testing, groundwater monitoring, biodiversity surveys.

• Stakeholder engagement with DFFE, municipalities, and communities.
• ESG reporting frameworks (GRI, TCFD, CDP).
• Budgeting for remediation projects.

• 3-5 years in oil & gas, mining, or heavy industry .
• Hands-on experience with:
  • Sasol/Engen/PetroSA operations.
  • EIA processes for energy projects.
  • Environmental auditing.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the Health and Safety portfolio in the Engineering space.
• Develop and review H&S rules, policies, and procedures.
• Facilitate H&S quarterly meetings.
• Conduct H&S audits.
• Arrange annual medicals for all employees.
• Initiate evacuation drills.
• Ensure H&S files and reports are up to date.
• Participate in engineering projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Research and propose sustainability initiatives.
• Propose and implement engineering projects that promote sustainability.
• Monitor for system deficiencies or areas of difficulty.
• Note: There is significant administrative work involved; candidates should be comfortable with this.
• This role is suitable for a young engineer aiming for an engineering or operations management career, where H&S experience is valuable.

Requirements

• BTech or BSc Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 2 years' work experience; ideal for a recent graduate or a candidate younger than 27 years old.
