Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role for a Drilling Foreman located in Northern Cape, South Africa. The Drilling Foreman will be responsible for supervising and coordinating drilling operations, ensuring all work is carried out safely and efficiently. The role involves overseeing crew activities, managing equipment, monitoring progress, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The Drilling Foreman will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with other departments to ensure project success.
Educational Qualifications and Work Experience
Grade 12
B Sc. In Geology or BGCE or equivalent certificate, recognised prior learning through on-the-job training will be considered
At least 7 years of mining experience, of which 4 years in a mid-management role.
Must have minimum of 10 years consummate experience in Exploration drilling of which 3 years as Foreman.
Experience in the operations of Hydraulic Long stroke drill, (for instance Rocors and Commacchio 900)
Duties
Managing of day-to-day operations on exploration site and liaising with site geologist.
Display knowledge of various Core drilling activities like wire line and conventional drilling and all commonly used sizes (AQ, BQ, NQ, HQ, PQ)
Extensive knowledge of equipment used on exploration drill site.
Must have experience in Mine Health and Safety like Anglo American standards.
Able to identify and manage risks associated with supervising and operating Drill rig.
Able to manage, plan and execute production targets.
Display ability to liaise with client regarding Health and Safety related issues as well as production related issues.
Must be experienced in incident management and investigation.
Able to execute cost evaluation and planning.
Monitor the moral of the crews and keep it in positive state.
Provide an accurate an accurate of production for each operator on month basis.
Be accountable for the whole operation and safety of the equipment and teams at all times.
Over inspect all operational aspects to ensure optimal production to minimal onsite.
Ensure that all persons are aware of all risks, hazards and control measures associated with any task that they are required to do.
Production planning by determining appropriate operational options in order to meet the set production targets.
Provide adequate organization and control of all drilling operations.
Extensive knowledge of people management skills in terms of enforcing discipline; delegating work or tasks to team members as well as coaching and training of direct reportees.
Delegating work or tasks to team members accordingly to ensure workload is shared and tasks are channelled to the correct department.
Creating unity within team members, by ensuring acknowledgement of responsibility on health and safety programme and strive to work to work as a team to achieve zero harm.

Role Context
Compliance, Risk and Safety
- Attend daily safety meetings (Toolbox talks) with the RC Drilling Foreman to discuss risk assessments prior to any drilling work being conducted, to identify and report any substandard conditions.
- Participate in all safety initiatives and attend safety meetings to support identification and reporting of any safety hazards and unsafe work practices.
- Participate in risk assessments, including checking safe usage of drilling equipment and proper usage of PPE, to support the maintenance of a safe working environment.
- Support a safe work environment, by checking the RC Rig prior to starting operations, marking items according to the pre-checklist to ensure all safety measures are met.
- Sign the Safety Declaration, together with the Foreman and RC Drilling team, prior to starting drilling operations, to indicate the block to be drilled has passed the safety inspection.
- Check the block to be drilled is barricaded off prior to drilling to prevent injuries or accidents.
RC Drilling Operations
- Conduct RC drilling operations, in accordance with established procedures and safety protocols, priorities, and maintain high levels of productivity by efficiently completing drilling tasks within specified timeframes and achieving set targets.
- Optimize drilling techniques to maximise drilling rates while maintaining accuracy and precision in sample collection.
- Measure each drilled hole, using relevant equipment, to check holes are drilled to the correct depth according to the drill plan (depth counter and Rockma system).
- Strictly adhere to safety protocols and procedures, including the drill plan, during drilling operations to minimise accidents, injuries and equipment damage.
- Employ proper drilling techniques and monitor sample integrity throughout the process to ensure the collection of high-quality samples.
- Adhere to sample labelling and recording protocols to maintain accurate data for analysis.
- Conduct regular quality control checks on drilling parameters and equipment performance to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Continuously observe and maintain the drilling cadence of the machine monitoring for drill chip quality, dust and inefficiency.
- Plug holes and discard sample remains according to procedure, to support site rehabilitation.
- Remove rods upon drilling completion, ensuring there is no contamination or damage to other drill holes.
Resource Management
- Determine resource needs within own area of responsibility to achieve individual role outcomes.
- Request required assets and resources for the fulfilment of work duties to attain quality work outputs.
- Use assets and resources optimally within own area of responsibility.
- Inspect equipment, reporting on those reaching the end of their lifespan to management, to ensure proper functioning.
Stakeholder Relations
- Engage with all relevant Departments on issues of the area of specialisation, as directed by the Manager.
