Responsibilities: Teaching
  • Teach epidemiology and public health to postgraduate students
  • Develop and update epidemiology and public health modules as deemed fit
  • Participate in departmental meetings and academic committees

Research

  • Produce and co-produce high-quality research outputs that effectively communicate research findings and insights to funders, internal and external stakeholders
  • Drive knowledge dissemination through presentation of research findings at conferences, webinars, and workshops, among others
  • Serve on editorial boards of reputable journals and participate in professional networks and memberships
  • Engage and contribute to PACER, departmental and Faculty outreach, and community engagement programmes
  • Participate in the University-linked community development projects
General Administration
  • Perform operational, leadership and strategic duties of PACER
  • Provide operational and strategic leadership of PACER
  • Administration and management of PACER including overseeing the compilation of progress reports, financial reports and attending Directors’ meetings
  • Attend annual and progress meetings relating to PACER
  • Enhance the reputation of the EMU, monitor the progress of the EMU, identify potential roadblocks, and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate risks and maintain functionality of the EMU
  • Oversee the proper discharge of administrative duties of the EMU including supervising personnel, financial management, and operations
  • Provide guidance, support, mentorship, and performance evaluations
  • Execute duties reasonably requested by the SAMRC, HOD and the Executive Dean
  • Participate in official gatherings of the SAMRC EMUs, the University and committees
  • Participate in the official meetings of the SAMRC, department and faculty
  • Regular communication of PACER activities with the funder, collaborators, researchers, and students
  • Ensure that staff and students adhere to the University’s Rules and Regulations
Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD in the relevant field (e.g., Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Health Sciences, and/or related field)
  • Proven expertise in Epidemiology and Public Health
  • Proven experience in research leadership and management
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and team management capabilities, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence
  • Track record of expertise in HIV and key populations research

Purpose Of The Position

The advisor will facilitate development and alignment of policies, strategies, and operational plans that integrate government services with CSO-delivered outreach interventions. The role also involves multisectoral coordination, technical oversight, and alignment with international best practices and donor frameworks (e.g., PEPFAR, Global Fund, UNAIDS, and SANAC).

The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Johannesburg, wishes to appoint a senior lecturer qualified in the field of Optometry, who will contribute actively towards teaching and learning, research, and CPD development; in line with the vision, mission, and goals of the University of Johannesburg.

The successful candidate is expected to undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision respectively, contribute to the development and review of undergraduate teaching and curricula, and, where necessary, become involved in community outreach activities and CPD activities, in line with the discipline/departmental specific objectives.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a portfolio of teaching activity of high-quality reputation and impact across a range of modules or within a subject area to relevant levels (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) students through lectures, clinics and/or practical, and personal supervision.
  • Actively participating in the research focus areas of the department, producing outputs such as journal papers.
  • Facilitate teaching and learning and review and incorporate new approaches to preparation, design and delivery of teaching, learning, and assessment within the domain of Optometry.
  • Actively involved in core activities of the department such as academic administration, course development, consulting, and community-related projects.
  • Contribute proactively to the development of new approaches to teaching, learning and assessment within the subject area, as well as practical and programme content.
  • Contribute to the identification and revision of modules, courses, and programmes.
  • Advise/support students in relation to relevant modules, referring them for further help and/or guidance as and when required.
  • Develop methods and techniques appropriate to the type of research pursued that add to the intellectual understanding of the field.
  • In possession of a DPhil/PhD (NQF Level 10) in the field of Optometry.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ teaching experience in Optometry within the recognised academic higher education institution.
  • Registration with the HPCSA in the relevant field.
  • A proven track record of research and scholarly publications in DHET accredited journals.
  • Expertise in relevant approaches and methods of teaching including blended teaching methods.
  • Experience in research postgraduate supervision and/or publication.
  • Strong commitment to research-led teaching, research, and innovation.
  • Evidence of developing external research grant applications and success.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a portfolio of teaching activity of high-quality reputation and impact across a range of modules or within a subject area to relevant levels (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) students through lectures, clinics and/or practical, and personal supervision.
  • Actively participating in the research focus areas of the department, producing outputs such as journal papers.
  • Facilitate teaching and learning and review and incorporate new approaches to preparation, design and delivery of teaching, learning, and assessment within the domain of Optometry.
  • Actively involved in core activities of the department such as academic administration, course development, consulting, and community-related projects.
  • Contribute proactively to the development of new approaches to teaching, learning and assessment within the subject area, as well as practical and programme content.
  • Contribute to the identification and revision of modules, courses, and programmes.
  • Advise/support students in relation to relevant modules, referring them for further help and/or guidance as and when required.
  • Develop methods and techniques appropriate to the type of research pursued that add to the intellectual understanding of the field.
  • In possession of a DPhil/PhD (NQF Level 10) in the field of Optometry.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience in Optometry within a recognised academic higher education institution.
  • Registration with the HPCSA in the relevant field.
  • A proven track record of research and scholarly publications in DHET accredited journals.
  • Expertise in relevant approaches and methods of teaching including blended teaching methods.
  • Record of successful postgraduate supervision.

Location: Centre for Viral Zoonoses, Department of Medical Virology, University of Pretoria, Faculty of Health Sciences, Prinshof South campus

The incumbent will serve as a Field Research Assistant in the Biosurveillance and Ecology of Emerging Zoonoses research group in the Centre for Viral Zoonoses, Department of Medical Virology, Faculty of Health Sciences. The project focuses on the Biosurveillance for viral zoonoses around bat/rodent-livestock-human interfaces in Southern Africa. The incumbent will work closely with researchers and students and primarily contribute to fieldwork specifically preparation for all fieldwork activities, the collection of ecological data and samples from animals with a focus on bats and rodents. It includes entering of data and analysis of ecological and field data.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for:

Preparing for fieldwork including;

  • Generating and verifying inventories , stock taking, and restocking of fieldwork consumables;
  • Ensuring that all equipment is clean and in working condition;
  • Coordinating packing and unpacking of field equipment and supplies at campus and in the field;
  • Overseeing maintenance, cleaning and disinfection of all field equipment;
  • Assisting with procurement of field equipment and supplies;
  • Coordinating accommodation and food for field visits;
  • Coordinating the maintenance and using of field vehicles and trailers according to UP policies;
  • Overseeing field store rooms and keeping inventories up to date.

Fieldwork related activities to collect data and samples from animals

  • Being present at all fieldwork activities;
  • Ensuring and reviewing data sheets to ensure that it is correctly completed;
  • Completing all environmental, site data and climate data;
  • Collecting from environmental samples from bat roosts;
  • Collecting of all climate data;
  • Collecting of movement and tracking data;
  • Coordinating disinfection of biohazardous equipment and supplies;
  • Coordinating waste management linked to fieldwork;
  • Coordinating return of samples to biobanks after collection;
  • Coordinating and assisting with the entering of all field data into the database;
  • Collecting of biological samples from small mammals;
  • Collecting of morphometric data from small mammals.

Assist in administrative duties specifically;

  • Providing training to other staff and students where needed;
  • Assisting with the administration of fieldwork SOPs (formatting, updating, editing);
  • Assisting with the analysis of environmental and ecological data where needed;
  • Assisting with research report and grant writing where needed;
  • Assisting with preparation of permits and other regulatory permissions.

Minimum Requirements

  • BSc/BTech in Zoology or Ecology or a related field
  • Experience in working with mammals, trapping and handling methods, fieldwork and coordination of fieldwork
  • Excel and other statistical analyses experience
  • A valid driver’s license
  • SAVC registered
