Canonical is building a comprehensive automation suite to provide multi-cloud and on-premise data solutions for the enterprise. The data platform team is a collaborative team that develops a full range of data stores and data technologies, spanning from big data, through NoSQL, cache-layer capabilities, and analytics; all the way to structured SQL engines.
We are facing the interesting problem of fault-tolerant mission-critical distributed systems and intend to deliver the world's best automation solution for delivering data platforms.
We have a number of openings ranging anywhere from junior to senior level. We will help you identify a suitable position depending on your experience and interests. Engineers who thrive at Canonical are mindful of open-source community dynamics and equally aware of the needs of large, innovative organisations.
Location: This is a Globally remote role
What your day will look like
The data platform team is responsible for the automation of data platform operations. This includes ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, and much more; but also provides domain-specific expertise on the actual data system to other teams within Canonical. This role is focused on the creation and automation of features of data platforms, not analysing the data in them.
- Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
- Write high-quality, idiomatic Python code to create new features
- Debug issues and interact with upstream communities publicly
- Work with helpful and talented engineers including experts in many fields
- Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
- Work from home with global travel for 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events
- Proven hands-on experience in software development using Python
- Proven hands-on experience in distributed systems
- Have a Bachelor's or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar degree
- Willingness to travel up to 4 times a year for internal events
You might also bring a subset of experience from the following, which will determine the exact role and level we consider you for:
- Experience operating and managing data platform technologies like PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, OpenSearch, Kafka, Yugabyte, Trino, Superset, Atlas, Ranger, and Redis
- Experience with Linux systems administration, package management, and operations
- Experience with the public cloud or a private cloud solution like OpenStack
- Experience with operating Kubernetes clusters and a belief that it can be used for serious persistent data services
Your base pay will depend on various factors including your geographical location, level of experience, knowledge and skills. We are looking for candidates from junior to senior level with interests, experience and willingness to learn around Big Data technologies, such as distributed event-stores (Kafka) and parallel computing frameworks (Spark). What your day will look like
The data platform team is responsible for the automation of data platform operations, with the mission of managing and integrating Big Data platforms at scale. This includes ensuring fault-tolerant replication, TLS, installation, backups and much more; but also provides domain-specific expertise on the actual data system to other teams within Canonical. This role is focused on the creation and automation of infrastructure features of data platforms, not analysing and/or processing the data in them.
- Collaborate proactively with a distributed team
- Write high-quality, idiomatic Python code to create new features
- Debug issues and interact with upstream communities publicly
- Work with helpful and talented engineers including experts in many fields
- Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
- Work from home with global travel for 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events
- Proven hands-on experience in software development using Python
- Proven hands-on experience in distributed systems, such as Kafka and Spark

- Experience with Linux systems administration, package management, and infrastructure operations

Duties & ResponsibilitiesKey Responsibilities:
- Ticket logging and resolution according to SLAs.
- Maintain applicable product and process knowledge to ensure IIROC, SOX processes and department policies are adhered to.
- Implement procedures that support the Data Security function.
- Conceptualise, syndicate, and produce periodic risk metrics with multiple subset views at regional, country, and site level by using the key metrics completed by the Cyber Security reviewers for every ITSM ticket.
Requirements:
- 3 years of experience in IT Support, working with computers at various levels and data security practices.
- High level of written and spoken English.
- Certificate/Diploma/Degree in Information Technology or related field.
- Highly skilled with deep knowledge of data security.
- Some form of Licensing or Certificate for Data Security (CISSP, GIAC, PSP, CPP, CEH, CISA, CISM, SANS, ITIL, MCTS).
- Good communication and business relationship skills plus a thorough understanding of data security.

We are seeking ahigh-impact Cloud Infrastructure Engineer with deep expertise in Google Cloud Platform (GCP)to join our AI & Data consulting practice as aSenior Consultant. This is a technical leadership role focused on the design, deployment, and optimization of scalable cloud infrastructure and services on especially GCP.
You will work alongside multidisciplinary teams of AI engineers, data scientists, and data engineers to build secure, production-ready platforms that power transformative AI and Data solutions for our clients across the African continent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Architect and implementsecure, scalable, and automated cloud infrastructureon GCP to support data platforms, AI/ML workloads, and cloud-native applications.
- Lead infrastructure design and provisioning usingInfrastructure as Code (IaC)tools such asTerraformandDeployment Manager.
- Enablenetwork design, security hardening, and CI/CDfor cloud-native and hybrid environments.
GCP expertise
- Design, configure, and optimizecore GCP servicesincluding:
- Cloud Monitoring, Identity and Access Management (IAM), VPC networking
- Apply best practices forcost optimization, monitoring, observability, and performance tuningacross cloud environments.
Consulting & Delivery
- Translate business and functional requirements into robust cloud solutions.
- Collaborate with engagement managers, architects, and technical leads to ensure seamless delivery of cloud infrastructure within time and budget.
- Contribute to proposals, client presentations, and architecture documentation.
DevSecOps & Governance
- Integrate cloud governance frameworks including security controls, audit readiness, and compliance requirements (e.g., POPIA, GDPR).
- Implement DevOps pipelines with GCP-native and third-party tooling for CI/CD and automated testing.
Required:
- 5+ yearsof experience in cloud engineering or infrastructure roles with astrong GCP track record.
- Proven experience designing and deploying production-grade infrastructure using GCP services.
- Strong knowledge ofTerraform,Linux administration, andcontainer orchestration (e.g., GKE/Kubernetes).
- Solid experience withCI/CD practices, DevOps tooling, and infrastructure automation.
- Deep understanding ofnetworking, identity, IAM, encryption, and cloud security fundamentals.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and consulting skills.
- Ability to operate in ahigh-performance consulting environmentand engage directly with enterprise clients.
Advantageous:
- Experience with Azure cloud servicesor hybrid-cloud implementations.
- GCP certifications (e.g.,Professional Cloud Architect,Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer).
