Description
We are looking for Data Center Technicians to join our expanding Infrastructure Operations team. Data Center Technicians are the primary resolver and troubleshoot and solve a range of datacenter infrastructure issues including, but not limited to: hardware, fiber, networking, and related problems. You will be part of the Data Center Operations (DCO) team, overseeing the operation and maintenance of the IT infrastructure and hardware for data centers in AWS Cloud regions. You will become the primary resolver for your support team, and gain troubleshooting skills on different hardware and software cases. You will be able to troubleshoot and solve most infrastructure issues and engage other appropriate solutions groups on more complex problems to drive solutions.

We are looking for a Data Center Operations Technician (Rack Decommissioning Data Technician) to join our growing team in South Africa, Cape Town. The Data Center Operations team that includes the rack decommissioning members are responsible for processing and facilitating large scale legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed from our facilities in South Africa. Team members will also process large volumes of media containing customer data to ensure that all customer data is sanitized and protected.

You will work in a team environment collaborating with other teams, which requires strong communication skills. Amazon Data Centers treat customer data with the utmost importance; selected candidates must be able to perform repetitive tasks without variance and adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that ensure customer data is protected and handled properly.

Key job responsibilities

  • Execute data sanitization procedures following established protocols
  • Collaborate with team members on equipment handling and processing
  • Document and track hardware movement through digital systems
  • Maintain accurate records of decommissioned equipment
  • Support safe handling and transportation of data center equipment (up to 18kg and participate in team lifts of 23+ kg)

A day in the life

A Rack Decomm technician begins their shift at the AWS data center by reviewing the day's decommissioning queue and safety protocols. Co-ordinate with the facilities teams to complete power isolation, they coordinate with other teams to verify network disconnections, ensuring proper decommissioning sequences while adhering to strict service level agreements (SLAs).

Throughout the day, they methodically dismantle server racks, following strict SOPs for handling sensitive customer data. This includes properly tagging components and documenting serial numbers. They coordinate with team members for heavy lifting requirements and ensure media sanitization protocols are followed within prescribed timeframes.

The afternoon typically involves processing equipment for liquidation, maintaining detailed inventory records. They regularly communicate with other teams to coordinate rack removal logistics and verify all safety and security procedures are met, ensuring all decommissioning SLAs and project milestones stay on track.

Duties/Pligte

Infrastructure and Facilities Support

  • Acting as the main liaison between the Department of Biochemistry, Facilities Management, and contractors for all infrastructure-related matters.
  • Identifying and addressing maintenance issues across the Department (plumbing, electricity, gas, doors, windows, paint, flooring, etc.).
  • Logging maintenance requests via the University's online system (Planon), following up on outstanding issues, and confirming task completion.
  • Coordinating and monitoring contractor work on-site and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Coordinating annual service of fume hoods, fire safety equipment, relevant filters, etc. as scheduled by Facilities Management.
  • Accompanying contractors during inspections and surveys, and providing advice as needed.
  • Overseeing availability of critical departmental resources, including various gasses, ethanol, and liquid nitrogen.
  • Managing the logistics for cleaning tasks.

Equipment Maintenance and Logistics

  • Manage scheduling and coordination of service and/or repair of departmental equipment.
  • Liaise with equipment users and service providers to organise servicing, including obtaining quotes, placing orders, and arranging payments.
  • Maintain accurate records of all services, repairs, and supplier interactions.
  • Coordinate with suppliers for the delivery and installation of new equipment.

Safety and Emergency Management

  • Conduct monthly safety inspections in collaboration with the departmental safety officer and departmental manager.
  • Ensure functionality of safety systems including fire alarms, fridge alarms. CO2 and O2 gas monitoring systems, eyewash stations and emergency showers etc.
  • Investigate triggered alarms (such as fridge alarms) and provide emergency response support
  • Act as the departmental after-hours contact, i.e. respond to after-hours emergencies as and when needed (should have access to transport at all hours)
  • Actively participate in departmental and building safety committees.

Departmental Support

  • Assist with reception and operational tasks during staff absences
  • Transport visitors or staff when required (valid driver's license essential).
  • Assist with chemical management system (CISPRO)
  • Control and manage laboratory apparatus, chemical waste, and chemical stores
  • Keeping a record of liquid nitrogen requests from outside users

Building Management

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • Matric plus a relevant tertiary qualification on NQF level 7, plus two years' relevant experience in a laboratory/technical environment, OR
  • Matric (with Physical Sciences or Life Sciences as a subject), plus five years' relevant experience in a laboratory/technical environment.
  • Proven experience in technical maintenance, infrastructure, and/or facilities management.
  • Proven experience in the management of equipment in a laboratory/technical environment, including support and coordination of equipment maintenance and servicing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.

The NOC Manager is responsible for leading and overseeing the 24/7/365 operations of the Network Operations Centre of DFA, ensuring seamless service delivery, rapid fault resolution, and proactive network management. ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS & TASKS)

1. Service Assurance & Incident Management

  • Oversee proactive monitoring, surveillance, and incident response across the fibre and IP/MPLS networks using advanced CRM, NMS, AIOps, and automation tools.
  • Ensure timely incident reports are generated, validated, and communicated to clients within SLA.
  • Lead escalation processes for complex incidents, ensuring root cause analysis (RCA) and preventive actions are implemented.

  • Ensure a comprehensive and updated set of Standard Operating Procedures and Absolute Rules are followed between all stakeholders and key working partners.

2. Customer Experience & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as the primary point of escalation for customer service delivery within the NOC.
  • Drive proactive, transparent, and structured communication to customers during incidents and maintenance activities.
  • Support customer presentations, service reviews, and technical demonstrations, showcasing NOC capability and performance.
  • Ensure feedback loops with customers and internal teams are embedded for service improvement.

3. Operational Performance & Reporting

  • Daily tracking and reporting on NOC performance KPIs (incident resolution times, SLA adherence, mean time to repair (MTTR), mean time between failures (MTBF), customer satisfaction scores).
  • Generate accurate operational reports (daily, weekly, monthly) for management, customers, and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement productivity scorecards, quality assurance audits, and performance analytics to improve team and individual output.
  • Use dashboards, automation, and AI-driven insights for predictive network health reporting.

4. Team Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop NOC engineers, fostering a high-performance culture and continuous skills enhancement.
  • Ensure workforce planning supports 24/7 coverage and SLA commitments.
  • Implement regular performance reviews, knowledge-sharing sessions, and training in line with evolving technologies
  • Promote a culture of accountability, customer focus, and operational excellence.

5. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Drive continuous improvement in incident management, change management, and problem resolution processes.

Competencies and Minimum Requirements:

  • 10 years' plus experience in Telecommunication / IT industry would be advantageous

The Level 2 NOC Engineer's duties will include monitoring, diagnosing, troubleshooting, tracking, and documenting the multiple environments and day-to-day customer support and interactions.

Strong communication skills are a particularly important requirement for this role. Responsibilities:

  • Monitor Dashboards of key metrics, proactively detecting any possible incidents before they occur.

  • Escalate incidents that require additional expertise with SRE, DBA's, Dev Support, etc, and work with them until the incident is resolved.

  • Be involved in the root cause analysis of incidents and help with incident reports.
  • Adding and updating documentation for runbooks used to help troubleshoot and resolve incidents and share knowledge with the rest of the team.
  • Implement and improve processes for monitoring/alerting, systems maintenance, and escalation.
  • Helping and guiding the development of tooling used to troubleshoot and resolve issues to make NOC work more effectively.
  • Develop key dashboards for transparency of reporting uptime and other metrics as identified.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 2 years' experience working in a NOC team offering 24/7 critical support.

  • Background in Linux administration.

  • Ensure that software and operating system on production and DR servers are of same version.

  • Ensure the technical information pertaining to the applications that your team is responsible for, is kept complete and updated on the Group Technology Repository. This includes architectural diagrams, SOPs, landscape diagrams, ownership information, application tier etc.

  • Actively liaise with DR team to book applications for DR tests based on application tier. Ensure that test frequency based on the tier is adhered to.

  • Ensure all production servers are backed up and receive reports daily.
  • Ensure failed/missed backup issues are addressed the same day.
