We are looking for Data Center Technicians to join our expanding Infrastructure Operations team. Data Center Technicians are the primary resolver and troubleshoot and solve a range of datacenter infrastructure issues including, but not limited to: hardware, fiber, networking, and related problems. You will be part of the Data Center Operations (DCO) team, overseeing the operation and maintenance of the IT infrastructure and hardware for data centers in AWS Cloud regions. You will become the primary resolver for your support team, and gain troubleshooting skills on different hardware and software cases. You will be able to troubleshoot and solve most infrastructure issues and engage other appropriate solutions groups on more complex problems to drive solutions.

  • Define or confirm, and gain agreement to the Scope of the Project
  • Prepare and maintain the Project Plan
  • Prepare and maintain the Stakeholder Engagement Plan (if the Project is part of a Programme, this might be developed and managed at programme level)
  • Prepare the Communications Strategy and Plan (ditto)
  • Assist the Project Sponsor to develop or confirm, and maintain the Project Business Case
  • Manage the Project (using the Project Controls) and ensure governance operates as per the Project Organisation
  • Direct the relevant internally assigned resources and equipment/service vendors as required
  • Programme and Project Progress to The Company's Project Sponsor and Owners (with recommendations for Risk Management and Issue Resolution) and to the Service Manager where relevant
  • Manage Risks for which s/he is identified as the Risk owner
  • Resolve Issues for which s/he is identified as the Issue Owner
  • Facilitate the Project Change Request process (identification, assessment, cost and recommendation)

Experience:

The DC Operations Project Manager will have had at
least 10 years' experience in managing multiple large complex projects or programmes, including at least 5 years as the Project Manager for major, complex, cross cutting, delivery projects.

The DC Operations Project Manager should have a Core Degree in an appropriate discipline from a recognised institution and be a member of an appropriate professional institution.
PMP Certification and PRINCE2 Practitioner Certification is highly desirable. A Master's Degree is advantageous.

The DC Operations Project Manager will need to be very familiar and specific experience with end-to-end management of the following infrastructure projects and programs:

  1. Understanding of Data Center Facilities at a high level would be an advantage.
  2. Understanding on high level the process of integration of new nodes eg obtaining floor space, power, HW installation, SW installation, integration to peripheral systems, configuration, implementation, testing, PPM, Corrective Maintenance, etc

The DC Operations Project Manager will have demonstrable experience in most of the following areas:

  • Engagement at executive management level in large enterprises.
  • Presenting Programme and Project progress reports to executive management level.
  • Capturing and understanding stakeholder needs, desires, and expectations and analysing the impact of the project on stakeholders, gaining, and maintaining stakeholder support, managing stakeholder communications and mitigating stakeholder resistance.
  • Establishing processes and procedures for maintaining programme/project management oversight and decision-making support throughout the course of the project/s.
  • Establishing project control processes and practices and implementing appropriate tools for efficient project management.

We are looking for a Data Center Operations Technician (Rack Decommissioning Data Technician) to join our growing team in South Africa, Cape Town. The Data Center Operations team that includes the rack decommissioning members are responsible for processing and facilitating large scale legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed from our facilities in South Africa. Team members will also process large volumes of media containing customer data to ensure that all customer data is sanitized and protected.

You will work in a team environment collaborating with other teams, which requires strong communication skills. Amazon Data Centers treat customer data with the utmost importance; selected candidates must be able to perform repetitive tasks without variance and adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that ensure customer data is protected and handled properly.

Key job responsibilities

  • Execute data sanitization procedures following established protocols
  • Collaborate with team members on equipment handling and processing
  • Document and track hardware movement through digital systems
  • Maintain accurate records of decommissioned equipment
  • Support safe handling and transportation of data center equipment (up to 18kg and participate in team lifts of 23+ kg)

A day in the life

A Rack Decomm technician begins their shift at the AWS data center by reviewing the day's decommissioning queue and safety protocols. Their morning involves identifying targeted legacy racks and verifying documentation. Co-ordinate with the facilities teams to complete power isolation, they coordinate with other teams to verify network disconnections, ensuring proper decommissioning sequences while adhering to strict service level agreements (SLAs).

Throughout the day, they methodically dismantle server racks, following strict SOPs for handling sensitive customer data. This includes properly tagging components and documenting serial numbers. They coordinate with team members for heavy lifting requirements and ensure media sanitization protocols are followed within prescribed timeframes.

The afternoon typically involves processing equipment for liquidation, maintaining detailed inventory records. They regularly communicate with other teams to coordinate rack removal logistics and verify all safety and security procedures are met, ensuring all decommissioning SLAs and project milestones stay on track.

The Data Center Operations team that includes the rack decommissioning members are responsible for processing and facilitating large scale legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed from our facilities in South Africa. Team members will also process large volumes of media containing customer data to ensure that all customer data is sanitized and protected.
You will work in a team environment collaborating with other teams, which requires strong communication skills. Amazon Data Centers treat customer data with the utmost importance; selected candidates must be able to perform repetitive tasks without variance and adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that ensure customer data is protected and handled properly.
Key job responsibilities
- Execute data sanitization procedures following established protocols
- Collaborate with team members on equipment handling and processing
- Document and track hardware movement through digital systems
- Maintain accurate records of decommissioned equipment
- Support safe handling and transportation of data center equipment (up to 18kg and participate in team lifts of 23+ kg)
A day in the life
A Rack Decomm technician begins their shift at the AWS data center by reviewing the day's decommissioning queue and safety protocols. Their morning involves identifying targeted legacy racks and verifying documentation. Co-ordinate with the facilities teams to complete power isolation, they coordinate with other teams to verify network disconnections, ensuring proper decommissioning sequences while adhering to strict service level agreements (SLAs).
Throughout the day, they methodically dismantle server racks, following strict SOPs for handling sensitive customer data. This includes properly tagging components and documenting serial numbers. They coordinate with team members for heavy lifting requirements and ensure media sanitization protocols are followed within prescribed timeframes.
The afternoon typically involves processing equipment for liquidation, maintaining detailed inventory records. They regularly communicate with other teams to coordinate rack removal logistics and verify all safety and security procedures are met, ensuring all decommissioning SLAs and project milestones stay on track.
