Following is a brief Job Description of this Data Center Technician Position :
Our customer has a Data center which has various devices. Our Customer is not looking for a Network Admin but need help with their physical data center tasks such as consoling and giving access to the NOC engineer on call, labelling fiber and cat6 cables, rack & stack, cabling, verifying racks and devices, replacing or adding SFP’s, sending receiving new equipment etc. Basically a person who has worked in a data center environment and can carefully do the above tasks without disturbing the existing equipment. They just want you to be eyes and hands for them in the Data center. That’s a brief one but you will be given an orientation before you would start working for them once they think you are good. For now, you need to be just confident on your data center working environment experience and the basic networking stuff. Our customer is looking for at least 2 years of Data Center experience . Also, this is a per diem job. Hours Vary.
Before we can start, they want to be on a 10-15 min pre-screening call with you.
Skills Required :
- Hands-on experience withCrossover, Rollover or Straight Through Cabling.
- Clear understanding of Multimode & Single mode.
- Identification of PDU’s and various cord types such as C13, C14 and C19.
- Hands-On experience with Structured cabling and home run.
- In depth knowledge ofTwinax or Multimode for connecting Cisco UCS to fiber connect.

We are looking for a Data Center Operations Technician (Rack Decommissioning Data Technician) to join our growing team in South Africa, Cape Town. The Data Center Operations team that includes the rack decommissioning members are responsible for processing and facilitating large scale legacy Data Center equipment through a liquidation process to ensure that targeted equipment is ready to be removed from our facilities in South Africa. Team members will also process large volumes of media containing customer data to ensure that all customer data is sanitized and protected.
You will work in a team environment collaborating with other teams, which requires strong communication skills. Amazon Data Centers treat customer data with the utmost importance; selected candidates must be able to perform repetitive tasks without variance and adhere to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) that ensure customer data is protected and handled properly.
Key job responsibilities
- Execute data sanitization procedures following established protocols
- Collaborate with team members on equipment handling and processing
- Document and track hardware movement through digital systems
- Maintain accurate records of decommissioned equipment
- Support safe handling and transportation of data center equipment (up to 18kg and participate in team lifts of 23+ kg)
A Rack Decomm technician begins their shift at the AWS data center by reviewing the day's decommissioning queue and safety protocols. Their morning involves identifying targeted legacy racks and verifying documentation. Co-ordinate with the facilities teams to complete power isolation, they coordinate with other teams to verify network disconnections, ensuring proper decommissioning sequences while adhering to strict service level agreements (SLAs).
Throughout the day, they methodically dismantle server racks, following strict SOPs for handling sensitive customer data. This includes properly tagging components and documenting serial numbers. They coordinate with team members for heavy lifting requirements and ensure media sanitization protocols are followed within prescribed timeframes.
The afternoon typically involves processing equipment for liquidation, maintaining detailed inventory records. They regularly communicate with other teams to coordinate rack removal logistics and verify all safety and security procedures are met, ensuring all decommissioning SLAs and project milestones stay on track.

- Over 3 years working in a 24x7 mission-critical data center environment.
- Applicable certifications such as ITIL Foundation, ASICS/Inventory Control, CompTIA A+/Server+/Network+, Basic Structure Cabling, Certified Data Center Professional (CDCP), Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Six Sigma Green Belt.
- Over 2 years leading a diverse technical or IT team of up to ten employees.
