Role Overview

We are looking for a Data Architect to oversee the design, governance, and optimisation of our organisation’s data architecture. This role will blend strategic vision with practical expertise in modern data engineering. The goal is to ensure that our data ecosystem supports advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and real-time decision-making, all while adhering to industry best practices, such as the principles outlined in DAMA-DMBOK.

Roles and responsibilities

• Define and maintain the enterprise data architecture blueprint aligned with business strategy, DAMA-DMBOK principles, and modern data platform best practices.
• Collaborate with enterprise architects to ensure data architecture is fully integrated into the overall IT and business architecture.
• Lead the adoption of data modelling standards (conceptual, logical, and physical), including dimensional modelling and data vault methodologies.
• Oversee Master Data Management (MDM) strategy, implementation, and governance across domains such as Customer, Product, and financial data.
• Ensure architectural compliance with data governance policies, security frameworks, and regulatory requirements (GDPR, NDPR, ISO 27001).
• Design scalable, secure, and high-performance data solutions across multi-cloud and hybrid environments (Azure SQL, Google BigQuery, on-prem SQL Server).
• Define integration patterns for batch and streaming data ingestion using tools such as Airbyte, Azure Data Factory, and FiveTran.
• Oversee transformation layer design using Dataform and dbt. Cloud, ensuring version control, testing, and deployment best practices.
• Recommend and implement data storage strategies, including Medallion Architecture, Data Mesh, and Lakehouse patterns.
• Collaborate with infrastructure teams to provision infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or Pulumi) for data workloads.
• Partner with Data Governance teams to establish and enforce metadata management, data lineage, and business glossary standards.
• Define data quality frameworks and embed automated validation and anomaly detection in ingestion and transformation pipelines.
• Champion data stewardship practices across the business.
• Act as the primary authority on data architecture, advising C-level executives, engineering teams, and business stakeholders.
• Mentor senior data engineers, analysts, and modellers on best practices in architecture, modelling, and governance.
• Facilitate cross-functional workshops to align business requirements with architectural design.
• Stay ahead of industry trends, recommending emerging tools and patterns for modern data platforms.
• Continuously optimise cost, performance, and scalability of data platforms.
• Lead proof-of-concept initiatives for innovative data solutions, including AI- driven data management tools.

• 10+ years in data-focused roles, with 3+ years in data architecture or enterprise architecture positions.
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field is required.
• DAMA-DMBOK knowledge required; CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional) or equivalent certification preferred.
• TOGAF, Zachman, or Certified Enterprise Architect certification is an advantage.
• Advanced expertise in data modelling (conceptual, logical, physical) and MDM frameworks.
• Strong SQL skills with proven experience in Azure SQL, Google BigQuery, and Microsoft SQL Server.

Hands-on experience with:

• Ingestion: Airbyte, Azure Data Factory, Fivetran
• Transformation: Dataform, dbt Cloud
• Processing: Apache Beam/Dataflow, Spark
• Streaming: Kafka, Pub/Sub, Spark Streaming, or Flink
• Strong knowledge of modern data architectures (Medallion, Data Mesh, Lakehouse).
• Familiarity with orchestration tools (Airflow, Cloud Composer, Workflows).
• Proficiency in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi).
• Understanding of data security and compliance best practices.

Preferred Skills

• Experience in cloud cost optimisation for data workloads.
• Familiarity with data catalogue tools such as Collibra, Alation, or Data Catalogue.
• Experience in BI integration (Looker, Power BI, Data Studio).
• Exposure to machine learning data pipelines (Vertex AI, MLflow).

This is a hybrid position based in Cape Town , requiring 2–3 days onsite per week.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Data Solution Planning : Lead and contribute to the planning of data architecture strategies aligned to key data solution initiatives.

We are looking to recruit a Data Architect within the Group IT department of The Clicks Group. The role will be based at Clicks Head Office in Cape Town and will report to the Executive: Data Management and Enterprise Architecture.

Job Purpose: We are seeking a skilled Data Architect to shape our information architecture landscape, strategy, solutions, governance framework, policies, and standards. The role involves driving the effective delivery of data management services to enable informed decision-making based on data-driven insights. Qualifications:

1. Minimum Required: Diploma in Information Studies, Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or an equivalent relevant qualification.
2. Preferred: Degree in the above fields.

Experience:

1. 10 years of experience in the IT environment, with 2 years or more in a senior technical lead role.
2. Strong knowledge of Data Governance and Analysis, Intelligence/Data Analytics principles, tools, and best practices.
3. Working knowledge of programming and statistical computer languages (Python, SQL, R etc.) and cutting-edge data quality management solutions.
4. Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements such as Data Privacy and Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
5. Strong knowledge of Data Architecture approaches to Data Warehousing eg. Kimbal, DataLake, Lakehouse, Data Bricks etc.
6. Competent with approaches, platforms for big data use cases in the cloud.

A position has become available for a Data Architect to join our dynamic team.

The purpose of the Data Architect role is to lead the data architecture strategy and ensure our systems support cutting-edge business intelligence and analytics. The incumbent must drive innovation in data management, define industry-leading reference architecture, and design robust database solutions.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

• Monitors, processes and maintains all master data cleansing requests.
• Leverage technologies to improve data management processes & drive success.
• Define & implement the strategy around data governance, data privacy & security.
• Defining reference architecture.
• Design & implement effective database solutions & models to store and retrieve company data.
• Examine and identify database structural necessities by evaluating client operations, applications, and programming.
• Assess database implementation procedures to ensure compliance.
• Oversee the migration of data from legacy systems to new solutions.
• Monitor the system performance.
• Manage the data engineers on both the SAP BW and Microsoft Fabric teams.
• Contribute to the overall data platform strategy, road-mapping, data product delivery, information security and compliance.
• Identify areas of innovation in data tools and techniques, and recognise appropriate timing for adoption.
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data & Analytics Management, Information Services, or related discipline.
• At least 7 years' experience within a data environment.
• Demonstrated ability with both Microsoft Fabric and SAP Business Warehouse.
• A proven track record in managing multiple business demands.
• Proven experience working with and co-ordinating multi-business stakeholders and business owners in a retail environment.
• Good working knowledge of SAP modules including Finance, Supply Chain, Sales & Distribution and Plant Maintenance.
• Proficiency in database management and design, data modelling and design and metadata management.
• Extensive knowledge of BI and analytics tools and platforms

As a Data Architect, you'll be responsible for designing and implementing the database schemas of all our products. You will work closely with developers to design an efficient data architecture in order to deliver best-in-class user experiences.

Requirements

• Develops, maintains, and tests architectural blueprints of a product's data model and database.
• Builds a solution by building the necessary data structures and APIs for a software application.
• Ensures databases are designed to meet project goals, compliance regulations, and technical specifications.
• Maintains database design and architecture through ongoing data change processes.
• Collaborates with all project stakeholders to define a solution, in addition to the technology stack.
• Models database schemas using Java.
• Experience with MSSQL or MDM technology is a plus.
• Hands-on experience with API design is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field required.
• Five years of experience as a data architect preferred.
• Experience with relational databases (SQL) and design experience.
