We are currently looking for a Corporate Tax Manager within our Corporate Tax Business unit in Johannesburg

Purpose Of The Job

The Corporate Tax Manager is responsible for delivering comprehensive corporate tax consulting and advisory services in the areas inter alia mergers and acquisitions, due diligences, private equity, dispute resolution and tax controversy as well as other tax advisory services. Additionally, the corporate tax manager will be responsible for assistance with the execution of go to market activities in line with the strategic objectives of the firm, as well as the end-to-end management of engagements with clients across sectors /industries. .

Key Job Duties Or Responsibilities

  • Address complex tax related problems and inquiries
  • Maintain confidential relations with clients
  • Effectively manage relationships with the relevant local authorities
  • Interpret and apply local income tax and tax administration laws (including keeping up to date with changes to legislation as well as new developments in regulations and case law)
  • Provide and articulate complex recommendations regarding tax solutions
  • Manage, lead and develop junior team members and professional staff
  • Demonstrate strong project management skills, and initial review skills
  • Manage the administration of tax engagement related matters
  • Manage the maintenance of essential tax records, reports and files
  • Prepare clear and accurate reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations
  • Achieve budgetary targets through effective work management
  • Adapt to an evolving work environment and accommodate changing client demands
  • Support the development of opportunities and collaboration across functions/units; and display relationship management abilities
  • Oversee projects from initiation to completion (including risk and billings), and be able to work directly with the Partner or Associate Director in delivering a quality product on time
  • Be able to identify risks and opportunities within existing client base and to secure new work.
  • Contribute effectively to the discussions around work (knowledge sharing) and actively participate in generating creative ideas and thoughts

  • Must have a wide range of corporate tax skills and experience including opinion writing, concept papers, compliance, due diligence reviews and dispute resolution

Overview

BDO has a vacancy for a Corporate Tax Consulting Manager within the Corporate Tax Consulting business unit in the Tax Department. The incumbent will be reporting to the National Corporate Tax Consulting Directors. You will

  • Assisting BDO to achieve its financial targets driving the BDO brand, business development, technical tax competence and client service in line with BDO values.
  • Interpreting and applying theoretical knowledge to a practical business solution by utilising a sound knowledge of income tax and corporate law.
  • Preparing and/or reviewing income tax and deferred tax computations.
  • Reviewing tax computations for the audit department.
  • Drafting technically correct opinions and reports for review and reviewing tax opinions and advise to be provided to clients and the audit department.
  • Gathering information from different sources by using effective research tools.
  • Assisting with the research and preparation of proposals.
  • Identifying income tax issues arising at clients and use various tools and techniques to provide suggestions on how to solve them.
  • Adapting to a changing work environment and accommodate changing client demands.
  • Liaising with audit partners and audit staff with regards to tax issues.
  • Liaising with SARS.
  • Visiting clients to remediate tax issues and assist clients with SARS audit and queries.
  • Managing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Preparing and managing budgets, debtors and monthly invoices.
  • Producing accurate work and client deliverables to a high technical standard while coaching and mentoring junior staff.
  • Managing subordinates in the corporate tax consulting team.
Qualifications
  • BCom Accounting
  • BCom Honours in Accounting or Taxation
  • M.Com, or Hdip (Tax) advantageous
  • CTA advantageous
Professional Designation
  • SAICA and/or SAIT
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Corporate Tax consultant
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Corporate Tax manager
  • Experience working with and interpreting financial accounting records

  • Adapting to a changing work environment and accommodate changing client demands.
  • Liaising with audit partners and audit staff with regards to tax issues.
  • Liaising with SARS.
  • Visiting clients to remediate tax issues and assist clients with SARS audit and queries.
  • Managing and maintaining client relationships.
  • Preparing and managing budgets, debtors and monthly invoices.
  • Producing accurate work and client deliverables to a high technical standard while coaching and mentoring junior staff.
  • Managing subordinates in the corporate tax consulting team.

Qualifications :

  • BCom Accounting
  • BCom Honours in Accounting or Taxation
  • M.Com, or Hdip (Tax) advantageous
  • CTA advantageous 

Professional designation:

  • SAICA and/or SAIT 

Experience :

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Corporate Tax consultant
  • li >Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Corporate Tax manager li >Experience working with and interpreting financial accounting records

Your key responsibilities

As a Manager you will participate in and help supervise multiple and challenging tax engagements and to deliver innovative tax planning ideas and solutions for our diverse clients.

To qualify for the role you must have
  • A BCom Honours degree but preferably a BCom Honours degree in accounting / accounting sciences with a completed or in progress higher diploma / masters degree in taxation favourable plus a minimum of5 years South African Corporate tax experience
  • Big 4 firm experience preferable
  • Excellent supervisory analytical and leadership ability
  • A commitment to learning in a tax technology environment
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with tight deadlines
  • Process oriented with excellent documentation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Mature proactive committed highly motivated and driven team player

Reporting to the Group Tax Controller

The successful candidate will need to ensure that Group VAT compliance is adhered to and provide support with Tax compliance functions within the tax department.

Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing VAT Returns
  • Reviewing and reconciling VAT accounts
  • Assisting with VAT audits and reviews
  • Assisting with SARS and general tax queries
  • Identifying VAT processing errors and resolving queries accurately and timeously
  • Preparing VAT reasonability calculations and reconciling annual VAT balances
  • Providing VAT training and communicating changes in legislation to the clerks processing invoices and expenses
  • Resolving VAT queries for Group and providing VAT advice where applicable
  • Providing support with the general tax compliance functions within the tax department
  • Preparing and submitting the monthly EMP201 submissions on SARS e-filing
  • Assisting with completing corporate tax returns and tax calculations
  • Completing DWT (DTR1 & DTR2) dividend tax returns and Withholding tax returns for the Group
  • Identifying tax risks and tax efficiencies within the Group
  • Assisting with year-end tax calculations
  • Maintaining Tax Asset registers for Group companies to ensure alignment with SARS tax rates
  • Preparing monthly statutory reports for Statistics SA etc.
  • Assisting with the financial year-end audit requirements within the tax department
Desired Experience & Qualification

Requirements:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Financial Accounting or Diploma in Taxation/Accounting or studying towards an Accounting or Tax degree/diploma
  • A diploma in VAT or equivalent certification will be advantageous, showcasing specialized knowledge in VAT compliance and procedures
  • 3+ years experience in VAT or similar financial role, demonstrating a strong understanding of VAT principles and regulations
  • Accounting software package experience (Sage 300 Accpac advantageous)
  • Must have experience on SARS e-filing
  • Experience in processing accounting records and compiling financial information
  • Sound knowledge and experience in the application of the Income Tax Act and Tax Administration Act and dealings with SARS
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills
