A key role has opened for a dedicated Occupational Health Practitioner to provide comprehensive health services supporting the wellbeing of staff and stakeholders. This position is ideal for a qualified healthcare professional with expertise in occupational health nursing and proven experience in workplace health and safety compliance.

As the Occupational Health Practitioner, you will be responsible for delivering occupational health services, managing clinic operations, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards. You will work closely with internal teams and external partners to promote a healthy and safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities (amongst Others)

  • Provide comprehensive occupational health services including medical examinations, audiometry, and spirometry.
  • Conduct pre-employment, periodic, and exit medical examinations aligned with occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Assess fitness for duty according to job medical standards and Labour Relations Act requirements.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to advise and promote occupational health practices.
  • Manage incapacity cases in line with applicable policies and legislation.
  • Conduct health risk assessments to identify exposures and develop medical surveillance programs.
  • Identify and report occupational injuries and diseases in compliance with COIDA.
  • Manage clinic stock, including ordering, dispensing, and record-keeping.
  • Oversee contractors providing occupational health clinic services.
  • Ensure clinic operations comply with current legal requirements and standards; communicate updates to stakeholders.
  • Develop, review, and implement Standard Operating Procedures and policies related to occupational health.
  • Maintain accurate health records and promote a healthy and conducive work environment.
  • Coordinate procurement processes related to clinic operations.

Minimum Requirements

Qualification(s) required:

  • Degree in Nursing with a specialisation in Occupational Health.
  • Registration with the South African Nursing Council (member in good standing).
  • Registration with the South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing (member in good standing).
  • Certificates in Audiometry and Spirometry.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Code 8/10) (Must be able to operate a motor vehicle).
  • Computer literacy.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 5 years post-registration experience as an Occupational Health Care Practitioner.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in team management (advantageous).

Knowledge And Skills

  • Occupational health, safety, and COIDA legislation.
  • Vaccination protocols and medical examinations (baseline, follow-ups, exit).
  • Employee counselling and team performance management.
  • Development of procedures and health risk assessments.
  • Primary health care and medicine dispensing.
  • Strong communication, conflict management, decision making, and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Empathy, professionalism, client orientation, and confidentiality.

PRIMARY HEALTH CARE:

• Diagnosis and treatment of day-to-day illnesses.

• Monitoring and treatment of chronic illnesses within limits of legislation.

• Treatment of minor injuries sustained at home

• Referral of employees and liaison with other health care agencies.

• Identify and diagnose employees with social problems and coordinate their treatment in line

with company policy.

• Treatment of minor injuries on duty

• Emergency treatment of serious injuries on duty

• Referral of serious injuries on duty for medical attention

• Promote a high standard of health for all employees

• Liaise with the safety committee where possible

• Participation in Emergency planning

• Conduct regular walk-throughs of the premises.

• Participate in the identification, control and prevention of occupational hazards

• Conduct monthly inspections of the ablutions, kitchen and canteen facilities and report to the

client

• Maintain updated MSDS reference file correlating with an updated list of HCS.

• Perform certificate of fitness screening interventions in accordance with the medical surveillance

and / risk profile of client employees

• Refer abnormal findings from medical surveillance to OMP

• Participate in workplace assessments/site walkabout/inspections

• Explaining screening outcomes to clients

• Ensuring the accurate, legal-scientific recording of services as a continuing event on a continuous

• Adherence to the Scope of Services (Client contract)

support to resolve the non-compliance

• Monitor expiry dates of stock and report those with an expiry date of within 3 months

• Participates in and is responsible for the drafting of a medical surveillance program and year

planner for the clinic annually

• Ensure patients are attended to in a timely manner

• Ensure excellent and professional customer service to clients/patients/contractors

• Maintain a well-balanced interpersonal relationship with staff members and patients

· BTech or Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing

· Diploma or degree in Nursing

· Qualification in Primary Healthcare would be advantageous

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:
* Providing comprehensive occupational health services to staff and stakeholders.
* Conducting pre-employment, follow-up/periodic and exit and transfer medical examinations, audiometry, spirometry to employees to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and signing off.
* Conducting fitness declaration according to the medical standards and requirement for specified job, considering the requirements of the Labour Relation act.
* Liaising with and advice internal and external stakeholders to promote occupational health.
* Management of incapacity in line with applicable policy, standards and legislation.
* Conducting health risk assessment to establish risk exposure, risk profile and design and implement medical surveillance programme.
* Identifying and reporting of occupational injuries and diseases (COIDA).
* Management of clinic stock: ordering, dispensing and record keeping.
* Management of contractors of the occupational health clinic
* Management of clinic by managing and keeping up-to-date with new legal requirements and standards and communicating these to stakeholders.
* Development, reviewing and implementing Standard Operations Procedures to ensure compliance with legislation.
* Drafting and reviewing policies to ensure alignment with occupational health
* Establish and maintain accurate and effective Recording system
* Establish and maintain healthy and conducive environment
* Implementation, Coordination and Management of Procurements.

Key Requirements:
Qualification:
* Degree in Nursing specialization in Occupational Health
* Registration with the South African Nursing Council (Must be a member in good standing)
* Registration with the South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing (Must be a member in good standing)
* Certificate in Audiometry
* Certificate in Spirometry
* Driver􀂷s License Code 8/10 (Must be able operate a motor vehicle)
* Computer literate

Experience:
* 5 Years post registration experience in Occupational Health Care Practitioner
* 2 years team management experience (advantage)


Knowledge:
* Occupational health legislation
* Occupational and Safety legislation
* Compensation of injuries and diseases legislation (COIDA)
* Vaccination protocols
* Medical examination (Baseline, follow ups and exit)
* Employee counselling processes
* Team Performance management
* Development of procedures and process
* Occupational health risk assessment and controls
* Primary Health Care
* Dispensing medicines
