Job Title: Machinist (CNC Milling / Lathe / General Machining)
Department: Production / Workshop
Reports to: Workshop Manager / Project Manager
Key Responsibilities
Machining Operations
- Interpret engineering drawings, job cards, and specifications.
- Set up and operate CNC milling machines, lathes, and drilling machines.
- Perform bolt-circle drilling (PCD), boring, tapping, and grinding operations.
- Adjust feeds, speeds, and tool offsets to maintain tolerance.
Quality & Measurement
- Inspect components using micrometers, verniers, dial gauges, bore gauges, and CMM (if available).
- Work to tolerances of ±0.01mm or as per client specifications.
- Maintain quality records and first-off inspections.
Maintenance & Safety
- Perform daily machine checks (oil, coolant, lubrication, safety systems).
- Report machine faults, tool wear, and unsafe conditions.
- Follow OHSA and mine safety requirements (PPE compliance).
Collaboration
- Work closely with fitters, welders, and project supervisors to complete assemblies.
- Support apprentices and junior machinists in training.
Continuous Improvement
- Suggest improvements in machining processes, tooling, and setups.
- Assist in reducing scrap, rework, and cycle times.
Required Skills & Competencies
- CNC operation knowledge (Fanuc/Siemens/G-code) – essential.
- Conventional machining (lathe, milling, drilling, grinding).
- Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings.
- Knowledge of materials: mild steel, stainless steel, cast iron, alloys.
- Use of precision measuring tools and quality control procedures.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Team player, reliable, and disciplined in time management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Maths & Science) or N3/N4 Mechanical Engineering.
- Trade Test: Fitter & Turner / Toolmaker / Machinist (preferred).
- CNC Programming certificate (advantage).
Experience Required
- 3–5 years machining experience in a workshop environment.
- Proven track record of CNC milling and/or turning.
- Experience in fabrication and assembly is an added advantage.
- Mining, automotive, or industrial component machining exposure is a plus.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Accuracy and quality of machined parts (rejection rate <2%).
- On-time job completion vs. job cards.
- Machine uptime and tool usage efficiency.
- Adherence to safety procedures.
- Positive teamwork and contribution to workshop productivity.
