Position Description

Position Summary

This position supports the delivery of CPI's strategic priorities, under the supervision and guidance of the South Africa Country Office Director in coordination with CPI UK's

Programme, Workstream leads and Project Managers. This Analyst role will primarily contribute to

CPI's Climate Finance Tracking workstream, including tracking global climate finance flows, aligning finance with low carbon and climate resilient development, and assessing key gaps in financing climate action at regional and sectoral levels as well as managing relationships with clients and key stakeholders.

The Analysts will be expected to lead components of research and advisory projects, manage client and stakeholders, and contribute to team leadership and mentoring. In conducting analysis, Analysts work in close cooperation a range of international partners from the policy, finance, and corporate spheres, as well as with CPI teams across the globe.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Includes the following and others as assigned:

Perform rigorous quantitative and qualitative evaluation of national and international climate finance mechanisms and climate and energy policies, risk management, and interactions between public and private actors and resources.

  • Supporting the implementation of complex research assignments and analytical

    climate finance tracking projects as designated by, and under the direction of senior management

Contributing to the writing and editing of high-quality CPI products, including full reports, executive summaries, blogs, and presentations. Produce high-quality materials that are fit for purpose time and within budget.

Identify opportunities to develop and consolidate work streams and support on development of funding proposals under guidance of senior management.

Train, manage and provide guidance to junior staff on professional work practices and lead by example.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • BA or BS degree in Economics, Finance, Investment or another relevant field. Post-graduate degree desirable.

  • Professional experience in financial services, management consulting, international nonprofit, government, and/or a multilateral institution.

  • Strong understanding of climate finance and the financial sector actors and actions that are needed to mobilize effective finance towards adaptation and resilience activities.

  • Excellent project management skills including time management, task delegation and prioritization, and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to manage and engage stakeholders in the financial sector.

Beneficial:

  • Master's degree in Economics, Finance, Investment, Public Policy, or a related, quantitatively rigorous field strongly preferred.

CPI is recruiting for one full-time position in our Cape Town, South Africa

As a Banking Analyst, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Script Development & Optimization: Maintaining, creating, and optimizing robust Python scripts to automate data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes, and to generate various reports.
  • Database Management: Leveraging strong SQL skills to interact with large relational databases, ensuring data integrity, and optimizing queries for performance.
  • Automated Reporting & Insights: Designing and implementing automated reporting solutions that provide timely and accurate insights for various functions within the bank, including but not limited to risk management, compliance, and operations.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Working closely with cross-functional teams, including compliance, legal, and business units, to understand their data needs, provide analytical support, and ensure quick resolution of open cases based on insights derived from automated reports.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Applying knowledge of Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws to ensure all automated processes and reporting adhere to regulatory requirements and best practices.
  • Data Analysis & Interpretation: Analyzing complex datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and opportunities for process improvement, presenting findings clearly and concisely to stakeholders.
  • Documentation: Creating comprehensive documentation for all developed scripts, processes, and reporting methodologies.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

To excel in this role, you should possess the following:

Experience: 0-2 years of professional experience within the banking or financial institution sector. Candidates with a strong academic background in a relevant field and demonstrable project experience will also be considered.

Technical Proficiency:

  • Python: Strong proficiency in Python programming, including experience with data manipulation libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy) and automation frameworks.
  • SQL: Expert-level SQL skills, with the ability to write complex queries, perform data analysis, and optimize database performance.
  • Domain Knowledge: Foundational understanding and knowledge of Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) laws and regulations.
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including C-suite executives.
  • Collaboration: Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.
  • Project Management: Basic understanding of project management principles and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel (for data analysis and presentation) and PowerPoint (for creating impactful presentations).
  • Leadership Potential: Demonstrable leadership qualities, including initiative, accountability, and the ability to influence and guide others.

Compensation:

This is a full-time, on-site position based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The compensation for this role is competitive and will be based on experience, ranging from ZAR 30,000 to ZAR 35,000 per month.
