We are looking for a dedicated Lecturer in HND in Construction Management to join our academic team. The successful applicant will provide high-quality teaching across a range of modules related to construction management, including project planning, risk assessment, and sustainable practices.

We have achieved outstanding results in the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS), scoring above the sector average in all themes and we improved on last year's exceptional results in 7 out of 10 themes.

Please note our Pearson programme offers Monday to Friday day time working hours only.

Responsibilities in brief

    • All aspects of planning, delivering, and assessing student work, ensuring that all learning outcomes are met
    • Develop, update, and improve course materials as appropriate.
    • Use a variety of learning and teaching methods/materials including live online learning.
    • Attend meetings as required, to contribute to the decision-making process and to develop productive working relationships within the various teams you will be engaged with.
    • To actively be involved in staff development activities and peer observations
    • Understand and keep up to date with student support to ensure our students have the full support and guidance they need.
    • To participate in the GBS performance management programme, meeting a range of clearly defined objectives for student outcomes, student satisfaction, retention and attendance.
    • Undertake administrative duties as agreed with your line manager
    • Take on other responsibilities as required to support the work of GBS.

Essential Skills and Experience

    • An honours degree in construction management, project management or equivalent; You will hold qualifications at least Master’s level in a relevant subject area and will usually hold a PhD or be able to demonstrate equivalent high level professional experience in the related discipline.
    • Previous lecturing experience for similar courses
    • Experience supervising student work and providing support and feedback
    • Experience teaching in the wider subject area
    • Experience with distance learning and supporting learners both online and face to face.
    • Professional conduct in all interactions with staff and students
    • Extensive knowledge of relevant subject matter
    • A firm commitment to personal and professional development
    • Attention to detail and accurate reporting
    • Ability to maintain thorough and organised student records

Desirable Skills and Experience

    • Knowledge and a track record of teaching construction management with a specific focus on building information modelling (BIM) and digital technologies relevant to construction at undergraduate and postgraduate level OR relevant professional experience.
    • Postgraduate teaching qualification (e.g.Higher Education teaching)
    • Experience in facilitating computer aided design workshops.
    • Experience of design / development of academic or professional education programmes or equivalent
    • Full membership of CIOB or an equivalent body

The Mandate of CEF is to contribute tothe security of energy supply of South Africa and the Region throughexploration, acquisition, development, marketing and strategic partnership. Itis derived from the CEF Act (No 38 of 1977) and the Ministerial directivesissued thereafter.

JOB PURPOSE:

To lead, coordinate and oversee the delivery of capital andinfrastructure projects within the refinery in alignment with strategic,regulatory, and operational requirements. The role is responsible for ensuringproject and construction services are executed efficiently, safely, on time,and within budget while adhering to quality standards and public sectorcompliance requirements.

REQUIREDMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Honours degree (NQF 8)in BSc/Beng in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in management and 3-5 years senior management experience in project management and construction,particularly in the oil, gas, or refining industry.
  • Proven track record of working in the refinery orpetrochemical plant managing construction services projects.
  • ECSA registration or equivalent is strongly preferred.
  • Project Management certification (PMP, Prince2,PMI) is highly preferred.
  • Master’s degree (NQF 9) in Engineering or equivalentqualification will serve as an added advantage.

DESIRED ADDITIONAL SKILLS/ COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong understanding of refinery processes,systems, operations and technical disciplines including mechanical, electrical,process safety, and construction methodologies.
  • Proficient in project management tools (MSProject, Primavera, or similar).
  • Skilled in interpreting engineering drawings,overseeing procurement processes, construction methods, commissioningprocedures, and ensuring compliance with HSEQ regulations in high-riskindustries.
  • Highly capable of managing and developing diverseengineering teams in a complex, unionised, or government-regulated environment.
  • Strong ability to balance scope, schedule, andbudget while managing risks and quality.

  • Ensurecompliance with safety standards, legal regulations (MHI, PER), and qualitycontrol systems (ISO 9001).

Constructionand Technical Oversight

  • Conduct risk assessments and ensure riskmitigation plans are in place, particularly around safety, quality, and projectdelivery.

  • Resolve on-site technicaland contractual issues in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Budgetand Cost Control

  • Oversee project budgeting,forecasting, and financial management; ensure projects are delivered withinfinancial constraints.
  • Develop and manage project cost controlprocedures, ensuring regular tracking and reporting of cost performance(CAPEX/OPEX).
  • Evaluate contractor bids and providerecommendations on the most cost-effective, risk-mitigating solutions for theproject.

Governance, Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure adherence to relevant public sector procurement legislation, engineering codes construction regulations and environmental laws.
  • Maintain rigorous projectgovernance, including stage-gate reviews and audit readiness.
  • Identify, manage and mitigaterisks across all projects and construction activities.

Resource Management

  • Plan, allocate, and manage departmentalresources to ensure effective delivery of operational objectives. This includesdeveloping annual plans and budgets aligned with strategic priorities,monitoring expenditure, and ensuring cost-effective use of funds.
  • Oversee human resource management within thedepartment, including workforce planning, performance management, and staffdevelopment.
  • Manage procurementprocesses by identifying service provider needs, sourcing suppliers in linewith procurement policies, and overseeing the quality, cost, and contractualcompliance of goods and services delivered.
  • Engage and communicate with internal stakeholders,government bodies, service providers, and community representatives.

  • Write clean web service APIs to support both CLI and web frontend clients, using Go (Golang) and optionally Python
  • Design and implement new features and enhancements from spec to production and ongoing operations at scale
  • Review code produced by other engineers
  • Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions
  • Create and enhance management, authentication and authorization API endpoints
  • Craft end-user authentication flows from design to implementation
  • Write Juju charms (operators) to manage operational concerns
  • Modernize the identity stack of our websites and products by driving adoption of best-of-breed IAM technologies
  • Deliver great products that users love by maintaining a culture of quality and engineering excellence
  • Work from home with global travel 2 to 4 weeks per year for internal and external events

What we are looking for in you

  • You are a software engineer, with specific experience building identity and access management products
  • You are familiar with the open source software, standards, protocols and concepts in the identity space (e.g. OpenID, OAuth, LDAP)
  • You have experience implementing authorization frameworks in distributed systems
  • You value secure coding and standards, and enjoy working on teams that do the same
  • You are comfortable with Ubuntu as a development and deployment platform

In addition:

  • Exceptional academic track record from both high school and university
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling narrative about your alternative chosen path
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, and accountability
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events up to two weeks long
