Industry: Mining & Resources Seniority Level: Senior Management Position Overview: A leading mining and resources organisation is seeking a skilled Legal Compliance Manager to oversee and manage all aspects of legal, regulatory, and governance compliance. The role will ensure that the organisations operations in South Africa adhere to statutory, mining, labour, environmental, and corporate governance requirements, while supporting business objectives and stakeholder engagement. Key Responsibilities: Develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive compliance framework in line with South African legislation (including MHSA, MPRDA, NEMA, Labour Relations Act, POPIA, and BBBEE). Oversee internal audits, compliance investigations, and corrective action processes. Liaise with external legal advisors, auditors, regulators, and key stakeholders as required. Primary Responsibilities :

  • Strong understanding of core AML concepts, regulatory obligations, and sanctions compliance frameworks (e.g., FATF, OFAC, EU AML directives).
  • Proven ability to manage task tracking, case coordination and follow-ups in a fast-paced and regulated environment.

    • Ensure effective implementation of compliance monitoring plans, and conduct regular assessments to monitor levels of compliance by the business
    • Keep abreast of all regulatory developments and changes that may potentially impact the organization and engaging with relevant stakeholders on a timely basis to ensure business readiness
    • Ensure ongoing compliance risk management by advising business on all relevant legal compliance risks and ensure regular assessment of the effective implementation of risk mitigation steps
    • Providing advice to business on compliance with all legislation in particular POPIA, FICA, CPA, & NCA

    Reporting

    • Prepare and draft legal compliance reports of all monitoring activities and attending to the distribution thereof and presenting at Social and Ethics Working Group on a quarterly basis
    • Prepare quarterly legal and regulatory compliance reports to the Social and Ethics Committee

    General Legal Advice, Management and Support

    • Ensuring Statutory compliance in respect of the rest of the business portfolio (supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, finance, procurement, property & leasing) by vetting and advising on legal matters
    • Assist in drafting legal opinions and reviewing and drafting agreements and policies
    • Consulting with various business units in relation to legal compliance matters.
    • Providing general legal advisory support to the business overall on various legal matters, including new projects and contract matters

    Desired Experience & Qualification

    • Minimum Bachelor's degree in law or LLB

This role requires a leader who can take charge of key legal, compliance, and public affairs functions, ensuring strategic alignment and risk management across the organisation.POSITION INFO:Education:Relevant legal qualification (e.g., Bachelor of Laws) Completion of articles and board examinations Admitted as an attorney or advocate Ongoing legal training and updates from law firms and corporate lawyers’ associations Skills/Experience required:10+ years of relevant experience as a practicing legal counsel. At least 5 years in a senior role, leading a team of legal counsels. Understanding of the South African property sector and its legislation Awareness of commercial impacts on business operations Job Description:Legal Leadership: Oversee company’s legal function, ensuring risk mitigation and alignment with business strategy. Contract Management: Negotiate, draft, review, and enforce contracts; manage the contract repository and approval processes. Dispute Resolution: Develop strategies to prevent and resolve legal disputes efficiently, guiding business units on solutions. Compliance & Governance: Ensure adherence to South African and international regulations (e.g., FCPA, OFAC), manage statutory requirements, and provide company secretarial support. Risk & Reporting: Oversee compliance reporting, governance, and REIT obligations while staying updated on legislative changes. HSEQ & Facilities: Manage health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) functions, including office management and regulatory compliance. Mergers & Acquisitions Support: Assist the Regional M&A team with due diligence and legal implementation of acquisitions. Stakeholder Management & Public Affairs: Manage external stakeholders, influence policies, communicate sustainability objectives, and implement public affairs strategies. Handle media relations and mitigate reputational risks. Financial Management: Manage the legal budget, oversee debt collection, and enforce contractual obligations. People Management: Inspire and lead the team, oversee recruitment and development, ensure performance management, promote a culture of learning, and drive staff engagement.
