The Haven Night Shelter Organisation’s method is to offer social work services, rehabilitation opportunities, family reunification services, physical care and support to adult people living on the streets who are committed to reintegration.
The Haven Night SHELTER ORGANISATION, NAPIER STREET, GREENPOINT requires the services of a DYNAMIC SOCIAL WORK SUPERVISOR who will report directly to the CEO.
The Social Work Supervisor will assist in supervising Social Workers; Social Auxiliary workers and Community Development workers working at partner NGO’s that will be based at the Head Office, 2 Napier Street, Cape Town.
NGO’s funded by the Families program of the Department of Social Development make use of supervision services provided by The Haven. These NGO’s focus on family reunification services, physical care, and support to families with the focus on preventing disintegration of family life and reunification of families.
The role of the Social Work Supervisor is for the improvement of the lives of the people whom these NGO’s serve. Effective functioning of the social work aspect is pivotal to the success of the organisations fulfilling its Mission and reaching its objectives.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: -
- Qualified Social Worker registered with SACSSP in South Africa.
- Seven years’ work experience.
- Code 08 driver’s licence (non-negotiable).
- Ability to work well with people as a team.
- Computer literacy – MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision.
- Experience in the NGO sector will be an advantage.
- Training or experience in Supervision will be beneficia.
- Supervise and advise social workers, social auxiliary workers and social worker volunteers to ensure an effective social work service for the Organisations. Be a resource to others and an advocate in the Sector for best practice in social reintegration and strengthening of families.
- Professional and general supervision of the Social Work staff assigned to you.
- Quality control of the work delivered by supervisees
- Advise supervisees with regard to all aspects of the work.
- Manage performance and assist with conduct and discipline of supervisees.
- Debrief and support supervisees to manage occupational stress and related issues to promote a sound and effective social work service.
- Ensure that all supervisees are trained and developed to be able to deliver work of the required standard efficiently and effectively, by inter alia, mentoring and coaching. This includes continuous professional development activities as prescribed.
- Ensure that the requirements as stated in the Transfer Payment Agreements, organisational directives and third-party contracts relating to social work are met and correctly reported on to the stakeholders.

The Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria is committed to training students, conducting research and engaging in community activities in order to respond to the constantly changing needs of different groups in society.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be required to:
- Teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels ;
- Supervise M aster’s and doctoral students;
- Conduct research and publish articles in accredited ( and preferably high -impact) journals;
- Participate in curriculum development of undergraduate and postgraduate modules as required;
- Present research at local and international conferences;
- Participate in generating third-stream income for the department;
- Conduct academic administration and other duties, as determined by the Head of Department;
- P articipate in the Department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research , and community engagement.
- A doctoral degree in Social Work;
- Teaching experience (undergraduate and postgraduate level) appropriate to the appointed position;
- Supervision experience of M aster’s students;
- A proven research and publication record of accomplishment in specialised field, appropriate to the post level;
- Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
- Applied knowledge of developmental social work;
- Knowledge and experience in social work management and supervision;
- Knowledge and skills in social work with groups;
- Language and communication skills appropriate to the post level;
- Computer skills appropriate to the post level (e.g., expertise in the use of Microsoft Office suite of applications).
- Practice experience in social work management and supervision;
- Teaching and practice experience of social work with groups;
- An NRF rating (for Associate Professor);
- Evidence of national team research engagement.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and Umvuzo medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

- Under the direction of CSP Director and/or Clinical Coordinator, provide case management, crisis intervention, and community support services to consumers
- Develop realistic individual treatment plans/in-depth assessments based on consumer’s changing needs, closely consulting with consumers and other team members
- Monitor treatment progress, and provide follow-up services
- Work side by side with consumers to assist in acquiring independent living skills pertaining to activities of daily living, vocational adjustment, interpersonal skills, social, recreational, and leisure activities
- Facilitate consumer groups to enhance the acquisition of skills necessary to improve the consumer’s quality of life
- Coordinate all treatment services, assess CSP consumer symptoms, and maintain regular in-person contact with consumers
- Assess crisis situations, intervene appropriately, and work autonomously
- Complete all necessary documentation as required by certification, funding source, and program standards
- Write reports that conform to prescribed style and format
- Maintain records documenting time spent with individual consumers, time utilization, meeting locations, individual consumers involved and their symptoms/status
- Monitor treatment plans, attend 6-month reviews/update, write progress notes based on treatment plans, and objectives/goals
- Consult with peers, supervisors, and other professionals regarding cases, treatment plans, interventions, approaches, etc.
- Attend staff meetings as required, advocating for the consumer
- Effectively present information to management, staff, and other organizational groups
- Demonstrate positive working relationships with consumers, staff, and other professionals
- Promote positive consumer relations
- Provide consultation, education, and counseling services to family/support systems involved with CSP as needed
- Complete agency training and review of company policies/procedures
- Maintain consumer confidentiality standard consistent with DHS 75 and HIPAA regulations
- Ensure safe work practices
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelors degree in related field with 1,000 hours of supervised post-degree clinical experience, or a field other than behavioral sciences with 2,000 hours of supervised post-degree clinical experience with person who have chronic mental illness
- Proficient use of Windows applications - Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and ACCESS
- Excellent spelling, grammar, and written/verbal communication skills
- Have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be insurable
