About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on, solutions-driven Maintenance Supervisor to oversee the effective functioning of all production equipment, utilities, and infrastructure at our Germiston facility.
This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a proactive approach to equipment reliability, compliance, and performance optimization.
Key Responsibilities
Operational & Technical Oversight
Supervise and coordinate all preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance activities.
Ensure continuous operation of production systems, utilities, and infrastructure.
Monitor equipment and plant performance, implement improvements, and reduce downtime.
Supervise internal maintenance teams and manage third-party contractors as needed.
Coordinate system shutdowns with production for scheduled maintenance or repairs.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure full compliance with HSE regulations and internal Safety, Environment, and Quality Management Systems.
Promote and enforce the use of PPE and injury-prevention practices on site.
Implement and ensure compliance with all corporate and local safety rules and procedures.
Budgeting & Resource Planning
Assist in the development of the annual maintenance budget and track spending.
Oversee the procurement and stock control of maintenance tools, parts, and consumables.
Propose and evaluate supplier quotations for maintenance projects or equipment.
People Management
Lead and develop a team of Millwrights, Artisans, and Technicians.
Set clear objectives, track performance, and mentor staff for continuous improvement.
Conduct team briefings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
Reporting & Documentation
Monitor and report on key maintenance KPIs and operational metrics.
Maintain up-to-date maintenance logs, technical documentation, and SOPs.
Collaborate with central functions for updates on engineering standards and improvements.
System & Technical Improvements
Support in the design and implementation of technological upgrades and retrofits.
Ensure maintenance equipment is fully operational, safe, and used correctly.
Contribute to the company's technical knowledge by maintaining accurate records of procedures and repairs.
Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
5+ years' experience in industrial maintenance, with 3+ years at a supervisory or management level.
Strong technical knowledge in mechanical and electrical systems in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
Experience from a Construction Chemicals or tiling is mandatory.
Bonus
Experience in working within a high-volume production environment will be an advantage.
Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) is preferred.

The successful candidate will be responsible for embedding a zero-harm culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance. This role is for a Global organisation and reports to the MD of South Africa.
Note: There will be limited traveling involved. The ideal candidate should be based close to the Milnerton area, and if outside of Cape Town relocation will be considered for the right candidate.
Requirements:
- BSc/BEng Degree Safety, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 10 years’ HSE experience in chemical/process manufacturing, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role. (Experience within the Chemical Manufacturing industry critical and non-negotiable requirement)
- Solid knowledge of SA HSE legislation, chemical safety protocols, and audit processes.
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence at all levels and instill a proactive safety mindset.
- Valid driver’s license and own reliable transport.
- Having managed the HSE for a multiple sites or sites/site with a staff compliment of over 200 employees
- Working closely with the Maintenance department and Operations Managers
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure full compliance with OHSA, Hazardous Chemical Substances (HCS), and Major Hazard Installation (MHI) regulations.
- Champion Process Safety Management (PSM) and hazard studies such as HAZOPs.
- Lead risk assessments, incident investigations, close-out reports, and drive root cause analysis with follow-through actions.
- Manage the Permit-to-Work (PTW), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and contractor safety permit processes.
- Oversee internal HSE audits, site inspections, and prepare for external audits by regulators.
- Drive Environmental compliance, including emissions monitoring, effluent management, and hazardous waste disposal.
- Implement and sustain formal HSE management systems (e.g., ISO 14001/45001) and reporting (e.g., Section 24 OHSA, COIDA).
- Engage with internal stakeholders, unions, SHE committees, and external authorities.
- Develop and track mandatory and role-specific safety training and lead behavioural safety initiatives, with the assistance of the Training & Development Facilitator)
- Build and sustain a culture of safety through visible leadership and frontline engagement.

Job Description
ROLE PURPOSE
To co-ordinate, manage, support, execute and monitor environmental, health and safety programs, standards, and processes to ensure environmental, health, safety and compliance at the Brits Site.
To support the HSEQ Manager in all HSE site activities.
Accountabilities
- To support compliance against the HSE Management System requirements
- Support implementation and compliance with Syngenta HSE Policy, Standards and Processes
- Support implementation and compliance of legal requirements relevant to the Brits site
- Support and drive the HSE Objectives
- Conduct Workplace Risk Assessments and follow up on actions to address the gaps identified
- Assess Occupational hygiene controls and recommend improvements needed to comply with Syngenta and Legal requirements
- Manage PPE inventory and ensure PPE is available for all employees and visitors
- Co-ordinate and support with H&S training: scheduling, conducting and records maintained
- To ensure Induction training is done for all employees, visitors and contract workers. Ensure that the induction training material is always updated and is relevant
- Conduct monthly HSE audits and ensure actions are implemented and are effective
- Manage the Enablon IM&L program and follow up on closure of observations, near-misses and Incidents
- Ensure that all incidents are reported, documented, investigated and recommended improvements implemented
- Manage the Go & See program by ensuring that the Go & See is scheduled, cards are available, and actions are raised in Enablon
- Promote and implement actions necessary to ensure HSE cultural behavioural improvement
- Support the HSE Chairperson with HSE Committee meetings and ensure actions are followed through
- Manage the Occupational hygiene program by ensuring that the surveys are conducted as per legal requirements
- Manage the Hand Safety, Legionella and chemical exposure program and any other program that has been identified to be suitable in the interest of health and safety
- Conduct respirator face fit testing, training for employees
- Ensure emergency management equipment is available, inspected and kept in good condition
- Any other reasonable duties which may be required by HSEQ Manager
- Manage the disposal of biological hazardous waste in line with legislation
- Keep records of all HSE related activities including but not limited to training, surveys, audits, communication
- Support the HSE&Q Manager with maintaining legal compliance for the site
- Implement communication strategy and ensure it is followed through
KNOWLEDG EXPERIENCE & CAPABILITIES
Critical knowledge
- Degree/ Diploma in Environmental Health / Management or Occupational Health and Safety or related
- HSE-related qualification.
- SAMTRAC or OHS Act Training desirable
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in chemical manufacturing industry an advantage
- Experience in HSE Standards and Processes
- Knowledge of the OHS Act and Regulations
- Knowledge of Environmental legislative requirements
- Knowledge of Risk Assessment techniques
- Conducting audits and writing reports
