POSITION INFO :
We are seeking a Design Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team, with a core focus on power distribution and power quality. Work alongside product and automation specialists to deliver technical solutions to the industrial and commercial sector, support ongoing R&D, and be a key contributor in the evolution of our energy portfolio.
Responsibilities :
- Electrical System Design :
Lead the design and specification of electrical and automation projects, with a strong emphasis on power distribution, power quality correction, and MCC assemblies. Use CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD) to produce and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and layouts.
- Project Execution & Solution Architecture : Participate in solution architecture and execution, from initial feasibility and costing to handover and troubleshooting. Collaborate cross-functionally with project managers, proposal engineers, and product specialists.
- Product & Technical Support :
Provide Level 3 technical support for the power product portfolio, acting as an expert resource for both customers and internal teams. Aid in technical investigations, application support, and advanced troubleshooting.
- Research & Development : Engage in the research, development, and enhancement of new and existing product solutions within the power and energy markets.
- Business Development : Support the sales team with technical input on proposals and customer engagements. Identify opportunities to drive growth in the power / energy business unit.
- Team & Stakeholder Management : Assist the Engineering Manager with team deliverables, freeing up management capacity and mentoring junior engineers as required.
Responsibilities :
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or related field).
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant industry experience (with at least 2 years in a design engineering role), focused on power distribution and power quality . Exposure to automation systems is highly advantageous.
- Strong electrical design and CAD proficiency.
- Solid grounding in energy distribution and power quality principles.
- Understanding of automation systems and integration.

The ACU business unit focuses on the roll-out of our mobile air cooling units (ACU’s) at mining clients to enable operations in remote underground hotspots. M-Tech Industrial patented this product, is the OEM, and does in field maintenance and service, and our footprint is increasing throughout the platinum and gold mines in South Africa and starting to expand abroad. We are looking for a dynamic individual to assist with the mechanical and system design engineering needs. The successful applicant will be based in Potchefstroom.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Report to and work alongside the ACU business unit manager.
• Apply mechanical and system design process methodically from URS to project implementation, commissioning and commercialisation.
• Designs may include but not limited to:
o Ventilation and cooling demand calculations.
o Refrigeration system design, optimisations, modifications and enhancements (change of refrigerant, change of compressor, change of duty, mechanical component and material changes, etc.)
o System integration of mobile refrigeration unit with mine infrastructure and auxiliary systems.
o Component, materials and instrumentation selection.
o Define maintenance and service requirements, measurements, checks and specifications and train technicians and mine personnel on maintenance and service requirements.
o Develop quality control procedures and checks from manufacturing to commissioning.
o Fault finding as well as failure and root cause analyses.
o Responsible for CAD manufacturing drawings and design documentation and manuals.
o Product modification and enhancement through M-Tech’s Engineering Change process (ECP).
o Need identification and new product design
• Responsible for overseeing commissioning and monitoring to optimise the solution for the customer.
• Patent and design registration where applicable.
• Develop and manage project budget.
Skills and competencies:
• Mechanical design experience where methodical design process is followed to ensure best chance for project success.
• Be just as comfortable in developing the URS, doing mechanical design, setting up manufacturing drawings in CAD all the way to implementing, testing and commissioning designs.
• Willing to work in the mining environment, specifically underground during initial site survey and design implementation and commissioning oversight.
• Team player and effective communicator
• Strong Thermodynamic knowledge
• Strong data analysis skills (must be proficient with MS Excel).
• Strong drawing capability with an interest in hardware and the physical building of equipment.
• Be hands-on and Practical
• Attention to detail
Desired Experience & Qualification
• Qualification – B.Eng Mechanical
• 5+ years relevant working experience.
• Knowledge on Mine health and safety.
• Managerial Experience
• Design, Manufacturing and Draughting experience.
• Refrigeration Experience will be beneficial.
• Previous experience in a mining environment will be beneficial
