Purpose

The Individual Life Advanced Analytics function is responsible for innovative, strategic and impactful projects for the business. The focus of the team is to support development and implementation of data science projects and involves exposure to a wide range of business areas such as underwriting, claims, legal and other operations, as well as the wider Discovery Group.

Key Outputs / Job Responsibilities

Key Outputs may include but are not limited to:

  • Mining large structured and unstructured datasets for data exploration to find new insights
  • Perform data investigations to inform operational efficiency and interaction strategies
  • Transform data into meaningful model inputs and data pipelines
  • Develop and refine predictive models such as fraud, underwriting and customer behavioural models
  • Prototyping and supporting the implementation of Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Model (LLM) and other generative AI business cases
  • Support model implementation and monitoring of model performance
  • Further develop existing models and research new techniques to fully utilise the unique and rich Discovery data universe
  • Participate in the wider Discovery Data Science community

What You'll Do:

Key Purpose: The main purpose of this role is to use data analytics skills to enhance retention and distribution strategies, improve business processes, identify product opportunities, assist in reviewing product implementation specifications, and vet scenarios to ensure products are implemented as designed and that administrative system values are actuarially sound.

Responsibilities and Objectives of this role: The successful applicant will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following functions:

  1. Using data analytics skills to optimize business processes, new business volumes, and enhance retention and distribution strategies.
  2. Involvement in developing new innovative product ideas and analyzing experience to aid the pricing team.
  3. Building MI data visualization dashboards to support senior management decision-making related to retention and distribution strategies.
  4. Planning for new products, serving as the link between systems and actuarial, and ensuring products are built as required.
  5. Reviewing new product specifications and conducting actuarial vetting scenarios.
  6. Analyzing servicing scenarios and identifying possible system constraints on product design.
  7. Ongoing involvement in addressing individual policy queries and issues.
  8. Assisting with ad-hoc investigations and analyses, including quantifying the financial impact of possible misalignments between actuarial specifications and system implementation.
  9. Applying actuarial knowledge to solve non-standard problems.

Required Competencies: Self-starter able to show initiative and drive projects to completion with guidance.

Applying Expertise and Technology: Analyzing, creating, innovating, and working with people.

Education and Experience: Essential:

  • Fellow Actuary qualification
  • Proficient in MS Excel
  • Database experience (SQL)
  • Experience with statistical software (R and/or Python)
  • Programming experience and understanding (e.g., VBA)

Advantageous:

  • Industry experience applying ML/regression models in analytics
  • Previous systems work or software testing/coding experience

Key Responsibilities
Gen Re is looking for an actuary with 3-6 years working experience to join our valuations team. The position will report to the Reserving Manager.

  • Assist with financial reporting on a US GAAP and IFRS basis
  • Assist with regulatory reporting for SAM and Solvency II
  • Engaging with internal and external auditors after the year end
  • Assist with any further system design developments required from a US GAAP LDTI and IFRS 17 perspective
  • Analyse valuation data and results to gain a deeper understanding and insight into the business
  • Development and maintenance of tools to analyse actuarial data to enhance management and regulatory reporting
  • Monitoring and provision of management information
  • Participation in international projects (for example US GAAP LDTI / IFRS 17 / Admin Data Systems projects)
  • Automation of models and business processes
  • Analyse and assess the valuation data for the purpose of experience studies or assumption setting.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified actuary with a minimum of 3 years’ experience
  • Excellent IT skills (MS Office, SQL Server, working with large datasets)
  • Strong problem-solving skills, particularly when in new situations or dealing with clients
  • Excellent skills in actuarial modelling, data, and statistical analysis
  • Strong statistical software skills (Knowledge of R, Python and GGY AXIS will be advantageous)
  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills
  • Consistent pursuit of excellence in execution and delivery
  • Self-motivated with a flexible attitude and enthusiasm for the role
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively as part of a team, deal with people at all levels and in all areas of the business
  • Able to work under pressure in meeting internal and external deadlines
  • Confident when communicating with more senior team members/colleagues throughout the organisation
  • Knowledge of SAM, Solvency II and IFRS 17 will be advantageous
