Your opportunityThe Academic Advisor is a critical member of the team in the Registrar's Office and takes the lead in developing and delivering group sessions around support for students with academic risk-factors. The Academic Advisor promotes a welcoming environment in the College for students from diverse backgrounds and serves as the primary support for at-risk group students.
Your responsibilities- Advising students on the development of their educational plans
- Advising students on academic and/or financial matters by providing options and consequences incorporating personal circumstances impacting academic success and an understanding of an individual’s background.
- Advising students on program and/or course requirements by probing and providing a range of options and possible consequences
- Advising on the appropriateness, precedents and process for petitions and appeals, and suggesting alternative course of action as necessary
- Facilitating educational workshops and seminars
- Developing learning outcomes for workshops and/or services
- Developing content for instructional workshops
- Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum four (4) years’ of recent and related student academic advising experience in a university setting, preferably in a registrar’s office.
- Experience interpreting, applying and advising on rules, guidelines, and procedures of the Faculty of Arts and Science or with undergraduate students.
- Experience working with prospective and incoming students.
- Experience and sound knowledge of best practices in advising and student services.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Advanced skills with ROSI/ACORN, Degree Explorer, or other similar enterprise database solutions/CRM systems.
