The Role

As part of the platform team, you'll help build and maintain shared production services that are critical to our global user base. This isn't just internal tooling -- you'll be working on real services used by millions of people around the world. The environment consists of modern microservices built in Go and Java, running on cloud-native infrastructure.

You’ll maintain and improve existing production systems while also having the opportunity to design and build new solutions from the ground up. During this you’ll contribute to cross-team initiatives, guiding best practices, architectural decisions, and technical strategy to handle high traffic and ensure maximum uptime.

Depending on your level of seniority, you’ll also support the growth of less experienced engineers through mentorship and knowledge sharing.

Because the team is responsible for production services, the role includes occasional on-call duties. However, we prioritize work-life balance and make sure your time is respected.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate distributed services running in production across multiple cloud providers and regions.
• Build and maintain components that are core to our product suite.
• Build scalable, reusable platform services that empower other teams to ship features faster and more reliably.
• Assist with the modernization of existing systems, building new components as needed.
• Dive deep into production issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend meaningful improvements.
• Monitor system capacity and performance and propose scaling strategies to stay ahead of growth.
• Enhance our infrastructure-as-code and internal tooling to streamline deployments and operations.
• Work closely with other engineering teams, product managers, and designers to deliver cohesive solutions.
• Mentor junior engineers, sharing your expertise and helping them grow through thoughtful guidance and feedback.

Skills and Experience

Successful candidates for this role will generally possess the following qualifications and skills:

• 3+ years of experience with one or more general-purpose programming language (Golang, Java, C# or similar).
• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but relevant experience is highly valued.
• Experience deploying and running systems in AWS, GCP or Azure.
• Experience with container and orchestration technologies like Docker and Kubernetes
• Solid understanding of network protocols typically used on the Internet.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Knowledge of software architecture principles, with experience working in microservices-based environments.
• Experience writing and maintaining automated tests to ensure software stability.
• Working knowledge of cryptography and public key infrastructure (PKI) will be beneficial.
• Linux experience will be beneficial, specifically in cloud environments.
• Familiarity with agile development methodologies like Scrum or Kanban.

As an engineer on our team, you’ll help us to understand our customers launch experience by benchmarking performance, running experiments, detecting anomalies and discovering patterns in how customers interact with us. Our platform handles a significant load of Internet traffic generated by internal and external customers that build their solutions on EC2. On any given day we use Java, Kotlin, Typescript, Python, Ruby and Go as well as various Native AWS services and Amazon-internal tools. We don't expect you to be an expert in, or know all these technologies, but we do expect you to have strong programming fundamentals and be excited to learn about these technologies.

Our team invents, designs and builds software that is stable, scalable and performant. We write and support code that is easy to understand with solutions that are pragmatic. We keep a high bar in code reviews to ensure high quality code.

Engineers in our teams have great ownership, a drive to innovate and aim to have resounding impact in whatever we build.

As a member of this team, you will own and contribute to the development of quality designs & solutions, solving complex problems. You are able to operate with limited guidance and take a long term view of your team’s services and how they fit into the broader architecture. • Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
