Job Description

A Senior Level Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) is required to join the Environmental Planning and Advisory team within the mining sector.

The candidate will primarily undertake independent environmental assessments on large-scale mining projects both locally and internationally, ensuring compliance with local legislation and international best practices.

KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS
  • 4 to 7 years' experience in ESIA, Basic Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, Environmental Management Plans, and Compliance Auditing, including ESDD consulting.
  • Experience with mining projects is essential.
  • EAPASA registration is required.
  • Strong knowledge of South African environmental legislation, especially MPRDA requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Honours degree or higher in environmental sciences; a Master's degree with research is preferred.
  • At least 5 years' relevant work experience, with preference given to those with up to 7 years in environmental consulting.
  • Project experience in the mining sector.
  • Knowledge of international standards such as IFC Performance Standards, AfDB Safeguards, and the Equator Principles is advantageous.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments, Basic Assessments, Environmental Management Plans, and Compliance Audits.
  • Manage local and international projects across Africa.
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders effectively.
  • Lead public participation processes and manage project teams.
  • Prepare proposals related to the above activities.
  • Work independently and collaboratively.
  • Possess strong technical report writing skills in English.
  • Demonstrate effective project management and organizational skills.
  • Be computer literate and detail-oriented.
  • Hold a valid driver's license and be willing to travel within Sub-Saharan Africa if required.
ADDITIONAL PREFERENCES
  • Proficiency in French (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Experience publishing scientific papers relevant to the field.

REQUIREMENTS :

  • A Doctoral degree in Civil Engineering (with a focus on Environmental Engineering) or Chemical Engineering (with a focus on Environmental Engineering) or a related field, is preferable. However, consideration will be given to exceptional applicants with a Masters degree (in the above fields) and potential to pursue a Doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering.

  • ECSA Professional or Candidate Engineering registration.
  • Evidence of teaching, research/experience, and successful higher degree supervision in Environmental Engineering.

Hire Resolve’s client in the renewable energy industry is urgently seeking the expertise of an Environmental Specialist in Cape Town.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Development:

    • Support Project Developers managing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for new projects, focusing on mitigating environmental risks.
    • Ensure compliance with IFC Performance Standards from project initiation.
    • Assist in drafting Environmental Management Program Reports (EMPr) and maintain up-to-date knowledge on environmental legislation.
    • Support biodiversity offsets and manage a biodiversity legal database.
  • Business Development:

    • Address environmental gaps in lender due diligence and ensure compliance with IFC Performance Standards.
    • Adapt Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) to project-specific contexts.
  • Project Implementation:

    • Develop and oversee compliance checklists for pre-construction and mitigation measures.
    • Manage contracts with external Environmental Control Officers (ECO) and Environmental Specialists (ESO).
    • Review reports and collaborate on solutions to environmental challenges.
  • Asset Management:

    • Ensure all company assets comply with environmental regulations and management plans.

Requirements:

Must-have Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science/Management, Geography, or related field.
  • Candidate should have SACNASP / EAPASA certification.

Preferred Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Honours Degree in Environmental Science, Geography, or related field.
  • Professional SACNASP / EAPASA certification.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in environmental roles.
  • Preferably 8+ years with experience in the Renewable Energy sector.

Technical Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of NEMA, environmental laws, and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with IFC Performance Standards and Equator Principles.
  • Skills in environmental monitoring, auditing, and contractor management.
  • Fluent in English; additional language skills advantageous.

Leadership Competencies:

  • Capable of managing and supervising external environmental team members.
