Key Responsibilities

ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT

  • Enforce compliance with authorizations obtained from Competent Authorities
  • Oversee environmental monitoring, review and interpret results and put mitigation measures in place as required
  • Put systems in place to implement the requirements of the authorizations on waste management sites
  • Undertake and review internal audits of environmental authorisations
  • Manage and review external audits of environmental authorisations
  • Provide guidance to operational teams regarding environmentally safe and sustainable practices
  • Manage consultants appointed to conduct environmental monitoring in line with authorization requirements, included, but not limited to groundwater monitoring, air quality monitoring and dust monitoring:
  • Draft and review scopes of work for appointments
  • Request and review proposals
  • Oversee appointment administration and provide input into contractual agreements
  • Guide consultants to provide expected deliverables
  • Facilitate site access
  • Consolidate, provide and review site information to consultants
  • Review and finalize reports
  • Oversee budgets and invoicing
  • Manage environmental management committee (EMC) requirements:
  • Appointing an independent chairperson
  • Prepare presentations and present audit report findings, environmental monitoring results and new site developments to EMC

REPORTING AND REVIEWING

  • Review reports submitted by consultants and providing comments to consultants
  • Provide inputs and compiling information for environmental and other specialist studies related to projects in the division
  • Provide inputs into presentations and materials for public participation meetings
  • Attend public participation meetings

CONTRACTUAL AND BUDGETARY PLANNING/INPUT

  • Manage contracts with consultants
  • Ensure alignment with the environmental monitoring and compliance budget and consolidate monthly reconciliations and forecasts

TEAM MANAGEMENT

  • Manage Environmental Compliance Officers.

AD HOC

  • Any other reasonable ad hoc duty as required or requested by management.
  • It should be noted that individuals may need to expand their roles / scope to cover the workload of other employees in times of high workloads or individuals who may be absent from work. This is the sole discretion of management.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • BSc (Hons) Environmental Management or similar
  • Environmental consulting, ECO and/or operational waste management experience
  • Experience in the waste management related authorisation projects advantageous
  • Strong report writing and review skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation
  • Knowledge of waste management legislation advantageous
  • Valid Driver’s license as travel will be a requirement

MAIN PURPOSE

The Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring organizational adherence to SHE-related regulatory and certification frameworks, including ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act), and PAPIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act). Key Responsibilities

SHE Management System Implementation & Compliance

  • Monitor and evaluate compliance with OHSA, MHSA, and other relevant local, national, and international regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with POPIA and PAPIA regarding SHE-related data and documentation.

Continuous Improvement & Industry Best Practices

  • Stay updated on ISO standard revisions, regulatory laws, and industry best practices to maintain compliance.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • SO 45001 Lead Auditor or Implementer Certification.
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or Implementer Certification.
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent).
  • SAMTRAC or recognized occupational health & safety certification.
  • Certification in POPIA compliance and data protection (e.g., Certified Information Privacy Professional – CIPP or equivalent).

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience conducting compliance audits for ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in SHE compliance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing certification audits and ensuring continuous compliance.

  • Supervise postdoctoral, doctoral and MPH students, interns, and research assistants
  • Participate in the accreditation of academic programmes and their evaluations
Research
  • Lead and co-lead research projects and initiatives to completion within budget and timeframe
  • Secure internal and external research funding to support the research projects and related activities of PACER
  • Promote and conduct cutting-edge research, including collaborative and interdisciplinary research, in PACER research priority areas aligned to the mission of PACER and Faculty
  • Collaborate with PACER collaborators as well as build new collaborations with other researchers, organizations, and institutions
  • Foster a collaborative and innovative research environment, encouraging ongoing learning, and growth
  • Produce and co-produce high-quality research outputs that effectively communicate research findings and insights to funders, internal and external stakeholders
  • Drive knowledge dissemination through presentation of research findings at conferences, webinars, and workshops, among others
  • Serve on editorial boards of reputable journals and participate in professional networks and memberships
  • Engage and contribute to PACER, departmental and Faculty outreach, and community engagement programmes
  • Participate in the University-linked community development projects
General Administration
  • Perform operational, leadership and strategic duties of PACER
  • Provide operational and strategic leadership of PACER
  • Administration and management of PACER including overseeing the compilation of progress reports, financial reports and attending Directors’ meetings
  • Attend annual and progress meetings relating to PACER
  • Enhance the reputation of the EMU, monitor the progress of the EMU, identify potential roadblocks, and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate risks and maintain functionality of the EMU
  • Oversee the proper discharge of administrative duties of the EMU including supervising personnel, financial management, and operations
  • Provide guidance, support, mentorship, and performance evaluations
  • Execute duties reasonably requested by the SAMRC, HOD and the Executive Dean
  • Participate in official gatherings of the SAMRC EMUs, the University and committees
  • Participate in the official meetings of the SAMRC, department and faculty
  • Regular communication of PACER activities with the funder, collaborators, researchers, and students
  • Ensure that staff and students adhere to the University’s Rules and Regulations
Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD in the relevant field (e.g., Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Health Sciences, and/or related field)
  • Proven expertise in Epidemiology and Public Health
  • Proven experience in research leadership and management
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and team management capabilities, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence
  • Track record of expertise in HIV and key populations research
  • Proficiency in research methodologies, statistical analysis, and data visualization tools
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with transdisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities simultaneously

Responsibilities:
  • Presenting lectures and assessing students in the Master of Public Health online programme.
  • Undertaking the supervision of postgraduate students and producing research outputs (co-publication of at least one article in a top 5% cited DHET-Accredited journals).

Minimum Requirements:

  • For Senior Lecturer, must have 5 DHET accredited published manuscripts in the last 3 years.
  • Evidence of international and national scientific presentations either oral or poster.
  • Evidence of successful research funding application.
  • Successful experience at master’s and PhD levels supervised to completion.
  • Experience in academic curriculum development involvement and innovation.
  • Evidence of continuous contribution to Departmental, Faculty and University advancement and administration.
  • Evidence of international or national research leadership and recognition in Environmental/Public Health research activities.

Job description

Responsibilities :

  • Coordinating office management activities of the department.
  • Manage the department's front office and act as the first line of contact to the stakeholders, staff, students, etc. in a professional manner.

  • Receive and direct calls to relevant staff members.

  • Keep abreast of new developments in the field and effectively apply them in the department.
  • Maintain a trusting and open relationship with other secretaries and managers regarding official matters.

  • Administer procurement of departmental staff teas, and stationery as well as the ordering of furniture, computers and office equipment.
  • Facilitate infrastructure maintenance to ensure a productive, safe and secure environment in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Arrange travel and accommodation for departmental staff for official business trips, conferences, and / or teaching & learning activities (local and international).
  • Develop and manage ongoing monthly budget control for certain units within the department.

    A position has become available for a Senior Regulatory Compliance Manager based in Durban.

    Job Purpose

    Provide advice, guidance, recommendations on the adherence of regulatory compliance practices in client facing divisions ensuring compliance regulatory risks are identified, assessed, and reported on for the Group.

    Job Responsibilities

    1. Identify and manage all Regulatory requirements of the Group.
    2. Manage the completion of all commentary and/or impact assessments requests from various Regulatory Bodies including the Prudential Authority, Financial Intelligence Centre, National Credit Regulator, and Information Regulator.
    3. Provide expert guidance and recommendations to ensure adherence to multiple laws and regulations regulating the affairs of the Group.
    4. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of key legislation such as the NCA, FAIS Act, POPIA, FIC, and other applicable laws (including subordinate legislation) that impact the Group.
    5. Conduct compliance regulatory training, keeping Compliance and all internal stakeholders (1st line) informed and updated on regulatory changes and policy requirements.
    6. Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal stakeholders by establishing effective partnerships to identify and manage compliance regulatory risks.
    7. Develop and maintain a clear understanding of the scope and nature of the business conducted by 1st line (business acumen).
    8. Develop a solid understanding of all high-risk legislation that applies to the Group.
    9. Keep abreast of all regulatory developments/changes that may potentially impact the Group and engage with all relevant stakeholders on a timely basis to ensure business readiness and ongoing compliance risk management.
    10. Contribute to the creation of a compliance culture and compliance awareness in the division by becoming a trusted advisor.
    11. Execute on all Regulatory Compliance projects (end-to-end) within set timelines.
    12. Provide advice, guidance, and recommendations on whether regulatory compliance requirements are met.
    13. Ensure accurate and timely reporting on any non-compliance, the management of compliance risks, and the state of compliance in the division.
    14. Provide advice, guidance, and recommendations to stakeholders on the state of regulatory compliance by reporting on how key risks are being managed, highlighting areas that require immediate attention, and recommending corrective action to stakeholders.
    15. Present potential compliance regulatory findings to stakeholders through formal engagement. Take an active part in all Regulatory Compliance governance.
    16. Assist in filing regulatory reports to the respective regulators, keeping the Group in good standing with regulatory bodies.

    Qualifications:

    • LLB Degree
    • Admitted Attorney
    • Member of the Compliance Institute of SA
    • RE5 Accredited: Advantageous
    • 5-7 years’ experience in a regulatory compliance position, 3 of which must have been in a managerial role - preferably in financial services.

    Salary market related for a senior position.
