Safety, Health and Environmental Compliance Officer Safety, Health and Environmental Compliance Officer

MAIN PURPOSE

The Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Compliance Officer is responsible for ensuring organizational adherence to SHE-related regulatory and certification frameworks, including ISO 45001 (Occupational Health & Safety Management System), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System), POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act), and PAPIA (Promotion of Access to Information Act). This role focuses on compliance verification, certification maintenance, and ensuring that the SHE Operations department effectively implements and maintains day-to-day requirements. The officer will conduct audits, manage certification processes, perform risk assessments, and oversee regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

SHE Management System Implementation & Compliance

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the SHE management system in alignment with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards, ensuring continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and evaluate compliance with OHSA, MHSA, and other relevant local, national, and international regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with POPIA and PAPIA regarding SHE-related data and documentation.

Certification & Audit Management

  • Prepare for and conduct internal and external audits for ISO 14001, ISO 45001, POPIA, and PAPIA certifications.
  • Identify non-conformities, implement corrective actions, and ensure continuous certification compliance.

Risk Management & Incident Investigation

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential health, safety, and environmental hazards.
  • Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to maintain compliance with regulatory and certification requirements.
  • Investigate and report workplace incidents and near misses, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective and preventive actions.

Audits, Inspections & Compliance Monitoring

  • Conduct internal compliance audits to verify adherence to ISO standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support external audits by regulatory bodies and certification agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and certification requirements, updating policies and procedures as needed.

Training, Awareness & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Develop and facilitate training programs on SHE certification standards, regulatory updates, and best practices.
  • Conduct regular awareness sessions on information security best practices within SHE operations.
  • Collaborate with SHE Operations and other departments to integrate safety and environmental considerations into operational processes.
  • Serve as the point of contact for SHE compliance inquiries and regulatory discussions.

Document Control & Performance Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records to demonstrate compliance with SHE certification and legal standards.
  • Monitor SHE performance metrics, analyze trends, and prepare reports for management review.
  • Ensure information security protocols are in place to protect sensitive SHE data from unauthorized access.

Continuous Improvement & Industry Best Practices

  • Stay updated on ISO standard revisions, regulatory laws, and industry best practices to maintain compliance.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance SHE processes and risk management strategies

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • SO 45001 Lead Auditor or Implementer Certification.
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor or Implementer Certification.
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (or equivalent).
  • SAMTRAC or recognized occupational health & safety certification.
  • Certification in POPIA compliance and data protection (e.g., Certified Information Privacy Professional – CIPP or equivalent).

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience conducting compliance audits for ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in SHE compliance within a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing certification audits and ensuring continuous compliance.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience developing and facilitating compliance training related to ISO and legal requirements.

  • Documentation & Record Keeping: Maintaining accurate compliance records and audit documentation.
  • Regulatory Compliance Monitoring: Keeping track of legal and certification requirements and ensuring adherence.
  • Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Collaborating with SHE Operations and external auditors for compliance execution.
  • Report Writing & Compliance Documentation: Preparing compliance reports and ensuring proper documentation for audits.

Knowledge

  • Compliance Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating compliance risks in an industrial environment.
  • Occupational Health & Safety Standards: Understanding safety regulations and best practices in the workplace.
  • Environmental Legislation & Best Practices: Awareness of environmental compliance and sustainability measures.
  • Incident Reporting & Investigation Procedures: Knowledge of reporting standards for SHE incidents and follow-up processes.

This is a challenging role where you will be involved in the implementation and monitoring of all HSE Guidelines, Objectives, Policies, and Practices.

Responsibilities :

Implement and monitor all HSE management systems on site, including HSE guidelines, objectives, policies, and practices.

Promote a safe workplace by providing training and improving overall safety.

Compile and audit all project safety files for Calderys SA projects in a timely manner.

Take responsibility for incident investigations, including initial investigations, recommendations, and preventive measures.

Provide HSE training, awareness, and induction to staff, contractors, and relevant parties on site.

Oversee that Calderys SA employees' medicals, inductions, and SHE training are current.

Attend customer safety meetings as required.

Schedule and conduct site audits to identify improvement areas and implement corrective measures.

Perform inspections to ensure compliance and report findings for resolution.

Ensure compliance with customer SHE management requirements at the site.

Record and report health, safety, and environmental incidents and injuries, participate in investigations and committees.

Audit safety files post-project completion and communicate outcomes to relevant managers.

Assist with auditing safety files for contractors.

Ensure SHE training for staff and contractors is booked, documented, and compliant with regulations.

Maintain training records and notifications with the Department of Labour.

Coordinate skills and competency gap analyses and implement training to enhance SHEQ competencies.

Transfer SHEQ knowledge to staff and contractors involved in technical functions.

Meet budgetary and financial objectives for SHEQ training.

Provide professional SHEQ advisory services to achieve customer satisfaction.

Ensure all HSE SOPs are followed in the production area and communicate safety aspects impacting the business.

Assist in root cause analysis and corrective actions, including risk assessments before implementing changes.

Support employees with Evotix reporting system.

Compile monthly SHEQ reports.

Implement emergency and crisis management plans; act as Emergency Coordinator.

Perform other SHEQ duties as assigned by the Head of Projects or HSEQ Manager.

Requirements :

Up-to-date knowledge of relevant HSE legislation (OHS Act, Regulations, COIDA, environmental laws, and plant safety procedures).

Strong organizational commitment and responsiveness, aligning actions with organizational goals.

Effective verbal communication skills, including influencing skills without relying solely on authority.

Good interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement and problem-solving.

Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft and Outlook.

Minimum SAMTRAC or Diploma in Safety Management.

Registered with SACPCMP with a valid certificate.

At least 3 years of experience in the refractory or related industry.

Responsibilities: Teaching
  • Teach epidemiology and public health to postgraduate students
  • Develop and update epidemiology and public health modules as deemed fit
  • Participate in departmental meetings and academic committees
  • Supervise postdoctoral, doctoral and MPH students, interns, and research assistants
  • Participate in the accreditation of academic programmes and their evaluations
Research
  • Lead and co-lead research projects and initiatives to completion within budget and timeframe
  • Secure internal and external research funding to support the research projects and related activities of PACER
  • Promote and conduct cutting-edge research, including collaborative and interdisciplinary research, in PACER research priority areas aligned to the mission of PACER and Faculty
  • Collaborate with PACER collaborators as well as build new collaborations with other researchers, organizations, and institutions

  • Produce and co-produce high-quality research outputs that effectively communicate research findings and insights to funders, internal and external stakeholders

  • Enhance the reputation of the EMU, monitor the progress of the EMU, identify potential roadblocks, and implement appropriate strategies to mitigate risks and maintain functionality of the EMU
  • Oversee the proper discharge of administrative duties of the EMU including supervising personnel, financial management, and operations
  • Provide guidance, support, mentorship, and performance evaluations
  • Execute duties reasonably requested by the SAMRC, HOD and the Executive Dean
  • Participate in official gatherings of the SAMRC EMUs, the University and committees
  • Participate in the official meetings of the SAMRC, department and faculty

Minimum Requirements:
  • PhD in the relevant field (e.g., Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Health Sciences, and/or related field)
  • Proven expertise in Epidemiology and Public Health
