We are seeking a Fixed Term Engineering Manager to join the Rio Tinto team. As the Engineering Manager, you will act as the Rio Tinto Owner’s Representative, managing the completion of detailed design and providing engineering support during field execution for the production of heavy mineral concentrate at Richards Bay Minerals, South Africa. The project includes a minerals processing facility connected to utilities supporting its operation.
You will lead the engineering function within an integrated team. The role reports to the Rio Tinto Project Director, with functional reporting to Rio Tinto’s Engineering Management Lead.
Key responsibilities include:
- Applying disciplined Engineering Management governance as per the project delivery framework.
- Managing the technical integrity of the engineering design, leveraging subject matter experts and third-party specialists.
- Reviewing key deliverables and actively participating in reviews and workshops, focusing on value-based project objectives.
- Ensuring comprehensive safety, environmental, social, and governance risk assessments are conducted, documented, and understood.
- Overseeing engineering design to meet environmental, social, and governance standards and commitments.
- Managing interfaces with the Owner’s team, fostering collaborative relationships to meet business goals.
- Monitoring and managing the performance of engineering service providers to ensure timely delivery within budget and plan, prioritizing construction schedules.
- Leading with Rio Tinto values and a Zero Harm approach.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering; Honours preferred.
- Professional registration with ECSA (Pr.Eng) or equivalent, or eligibility to register.
- 15+ years of relevant experience in Engineering Management, ideally on major mining projects (> $300M), especially in South Africa or similar contexts.
- Experience in Mineral Sands operations, including dry mining and tailings systems.
- Proven ability to operate across functions and geographies within a matrixed team environment.
- Commitment to safe, ethical, and sustainable project delivery.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and build trust.

Main duties and responsibilities

Job Description
Purpose of the Role:
The Employment Equity (EE) Administrator is responsible for providing administrative support in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the company’s Employment Equity initiatives in compliance with the Employment Equity Act. The role ensures accurate record-keeping, assists in compiling statutory reports, coordinates EE Committee activities, and supports employment equity-related communication and awareness initiatives within the organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
Employment Equity Administration
Maintain and update accurate EE records, including employee demographics, recruitment, promotions, terminations, and occupational level data.
Compile and prepare statutory reports (EEA2 and EEA4) for submission to the Department of Employment and Labour.
Assist in the drafting, reviewing, and updating of the company’s Employment Equity Plan in line with legislation and business objectives.
EE Committee Coordination
Schedule, coordinate, and provide administrative support for Employment Equity Committee meetings.
Prepare meeting agendas, minutes, and supporting documents.
Record and track attendance and action items from EE Committee meetings.
Compliance and Reporting
Ensure compliance with the Employment Equity Act and associated regulations.
Support internal and external audits by providing required EE documentation and reports.
Monitor the implementation of EE targets and milestones, and compile progress reports for management.
Training and Awareness Support
Coordinate EE-related training sessions for management and employees.
Facilitate the inclusion of EE policy awareness during employee onboarding processes.
Assist in promoting EE initiatives and campaigns across the business.
General HR Administrative Support
Handle correspondence and filing relating to Employment Equity matters.
Provide EE data and reporting for BBBEE verification and other strategic HR projects when required.
Stay informed about changes in EE legislation and best practices, ensuring continuous compliance.
Qualifications and Experience:
Minimum Requirements:
Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
Relevant HR / Business Administration qualification (advantageous)
1–3 years’ experience in HR administration or Employment Equity administration
Knowledge of the Employment Equity Act and related legislation
