- Facilitate learning support programs at the College and the administration that goes with it.
Job Description of the Learning Support Facilitator
As our Learning Support Facilitator, you will:
- Be part of the Academic Support Department, working closely with the Academic Support Director and Educational Psychologist.
- Assist in implementing accommodations throughout the year, managing computer accommodations and private invigilation. This includes the role of reader/scribe when needed.
- Work alongside the Educational Psychologist to provide Learner Support Programs, implementing effective strategies and interventions to help students succeed in mainstream education. This may include classroom visits to get a better understanding of mainstream education and inclusivity.
- Monitor new students’ academic adjustment to St Alban’s and provide the necessary support.
- Manage the appointed reading program and/or other intervention programs. This includes the administration and monitoring of the processes, as well as monitoring student participation.
- Assist in keeping minutes of meetings and ADAM notes up to date and accessible to staff.
- Work alongside the St Alban’s Pastoral Tutors, assisting tutors from time to time in both group settings and one-on-one interactions where tutees need executive function support.
- Monitor private tutors who use St Alban’s facilities to work with students.
Criteria
- Proven experience in helping students who have learning barriers (e.g., dyslexia, ADHD, dyscalculia, executive function challenges, etc.).
- Demonstrated excellent administrative skills, including proficiency in record-keeping, scheduling, and general office management.
- Ability to work exceptionally well in groups and foster collaborative relationships.
- Capacity to provide effective and empathetic support to individuals.
- Highly adaptable and resourceful, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A genuine passion for education and student development.

The Role
Working from our Alanvale Campus, the Learning Support Tutor supports delivery teams by providing tutoring support to students undertaking vocational education and training programs, on an individual and small group basis through face-to-face, email and online contact.
On any given day, your duties will include:
· Provide tutoring to students individually and in small groups, helping with theory and practical tasks.
· Develop and maintain learning materials and resources, including online content.
· Collaborate with teachers, technical employees, and admin staff to create a positive experience and successful outcomes for our students.
· Support teachers by inputting information to the Learning Management System (LMS) and updating documentation.
What will you bring
· Experience in the Automotive industry, with a sufficient level of skills and knowledge to tutor students in theory and practical based tasks.
· Capability to perform manual labour tasks while adhering to workplace safety regulations
· High-level communication and interpersonal skills to connect, collaborate, and build respectful relationships with our students
· Digital literacy with the ability to create online learning content and assist students to access and operate online learning platforms.

- An understanding of and passion for children who learn differently.
- Experience in providing emotional support to primary school children.
- Experience in administering standardised tests.
- The ability to manage individual learning profiles.
- A sound understanding of the strategies and latest research to assist children with barriers to learning, and to support teachers of mixed-ability classes.
- A progressive understanding of CAPS across the Junior and Senior Primary phases.
- Knowledge of the implementation of concessions and accommodations for exams in the senior primary.
- The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, working closely with teachers and therapists.
- A proven record of innovation, commitment and professionalism, with a dynamic and motivated approach to education.
- SACE registration.
- A police clearance and a sexual offenders clearance certificate.
- Excellent communication skills, organisational skills, and computer literacy skills.
- Familiarity with the Time2Read and NumberSense programmes would be advantageous.

CORE FUNCTIONS:

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is a vibrant, diverse and dynamic University rooted in the African continent with an increasing global reach. UWC actively responds in critical and creative ways to the development needs of the country within an ever-changing and challenging global context. The UWC CoLab for e-Inclusion and Social Innovation, located in the Institutional Planning unit, plays a thought leadership role in terms of an increasingly digitized society. The CoLab forms part of national network of 8 universities in collaboration with national government and industry partners to contribute towards the national digital skills agenda, focusing on practical interventions, research and advocacy.
The CoLab is responsible for the Future Innovation Lab (FIL), a multi-year Employment Equity Investment collaborative program between the University of the Western Cape and Samsung, aimed at providing disadvantages youth to develop in-demand software development skills in view of creating opportunities for them in the market. The activities and deliverable of the FIL programme is performed by the CoLab staff members and has a dedicated programme manager. As a social innovation initiative, it reports into the DVC: Research and Innovation.
The CoLab seeks to appoint a highly motivated and compassionate Student Support Coordinator to join the core team. Coordinator: Student Support will be responsible for coordinating an integrated approach towards student support throughout the 10-month period of the FIL-program for 70% of his/her time while 30% will be allocated to other CoLab initiatives. All the work needs to be done in close collaboration with CoLab stakeholders including industry and government partners, community-based organisations and relevant internal UWC role-players. This role requires learning and development expertise, excellent interpersonal skills, a good understanding of the requirements of the business environment, the challenges faced by previously disadvantaged students as well as the UWC financial and administrative policies and procedures. The coordinator will be responsible for the fostering of a supportive and inclusive but efficient learning environment.
The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for students, offering guidance and support throughout their participation in the software development programme.
- Coordinate the student recruitment and registration process, including disbursements of stipends.
- Coordinate an integrated student support program for students for the 10-month period of the FIL program, in collaboration with team members, industry providers and UWC and other service providers.
- Collaborate with the program team to identify and address individual student needs and develop appropriate strategies for academic success.
- Co-design, coordinate and deliver academic support services, including tutoring, study groups, and workshops, to enhance students' non-technical and work readiness skills.
- Collaborate with the software development instructors and programme manager to ensure alignment between the support provided and the curriculum, promoting a cohesive learning experience.
- Coordinate personal development workshops, focusing on communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving, and career development.
- Coordinate initiatives to assists students in navigating challenges outside the classroom, such as financial constraints, housing, transportation, and personal obligations.
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions, progress, and support services provided.
- Administer the financial reporting of the Future Innovation Lab and the national program and projects within the unit (CoLab for eInclusion and Social Innovation).
- Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in a learning and development or student support role preferably in a Higher Education environment.
- Experience working with disadvantaged youth or marginalized communities, preferably in an educational or social support capacity.
Required competencies: (skills, knowledge, and behavioural attributes)
- Good understanding of the digital inclusion challenges faced by previously disadvantaged youth in South Africa, particularly related to education and employment opportunities.
