CORE PURPOSE OF JOBThe Natural Resource Science & Management Cluster at the George Campus seeks a dedicated professional to enhance teaching, research, and engagement in Agricultural Management practices.
This academic position aims to improve learning and research at the intersection of agricultural management and farm practices, focusing on optimizing resource use in farming. The candidate should be capable of teaching and researching across disciplines within the Agricultural Management diploma and degree programs, with specialization in Agricultural Economics/Management and Plant Production/Horticulture. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including MSc and PhD.
The department engages in diverse research activities, encouraging multidisciplinary approaches and collaboration at national and international levels. The candidate will support research programs and contribute to industry engagement through our undergraduate work-integrated learning program, fostering strong industry relationships.
The George Campus, a satellite of Nelson Mandela University, is situated on the outskirts of George, near the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS- Teach undergraduate Agricultural Management courses, including applied financial planning, regenerative agriculture, and other assigned courses.
- Facilitate postgraduate learning in Agricultural Management/Economics.
- Initiate and publish research in relevant fields.
- Build networks within the agricultural industry and academia.
- Engage with stakeholders to benefit students and the department.
- Perform administrative duties such as managing work-integrated learning, postgraduate supervision, sourcing funding, offering short courses, organizing practicals, and student recruitment.
- Develop and review curricula and modules.
- Lead community engagement projects and participate in professional development.
- Understanding of agriculture as an integrated system and ability to work across disciplines.
- Application of agricultural management/economics concepts in practice.
- Development of educational materials and effective teaching methods.
- Supervision of Honours, Master’s, and PhD students.
- Research publication record.
- Ability to network with industry practitioners and researchers.
- Engagement with industry stakeholders and teamwork skills.
- Creativity and innovation.
- Excellent communication skills in two of the three official Western Cape languages.
- PhD in Agricultural Economics or Farm Management, focusing on horticulture or plant production.
- At least 5 years of relevant experience, including industry and academic roles.
- Proven experience in farm financial planning and regenerative agriculture.
- Research capability in a cross-disciplinary agricultural context.
- Publication record in relevant fields.
- Leadership experience is advantageous.
- Engagement with the agricultural community.

VACANCY: TECHNICAL SUPERVISOR (CROP PRODUCTION)
POSITION NUMBER: M001080

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: PERMANENT APPOINTMENT
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Provide leadership and technical assistance in all sections of the Crop Section of the farm. Technician will manage agronomy field, greenhouses and orchard at the farm. Manage all available specialized equipment used in support of production, teaching and learning, and research activities. Diligently facilitate the handling of all processes involved in crop fields and keep adequate record and good control of consumable items utilized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervision of staff and management of production in the crop section of the farm.
- Implement plans for practical sessions for Undergraduate students and staff.
- Implement plans for research activities for staff and students.
- Engage in community outreach activities.
- A Diploma/Advanced Certificate (NQF level 6) in Farm Management/ Agronomy/ Horticulture/ Crop Science.
- Professional membership with SACNASP.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ technical supervisory experience in the Agronomy field, orchard, greenhouses and management.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ farm management experience.
ADDED ADVANTAGE:
- A bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8) in Farm Management.
- A bachelor’s degree (NQF level 8) in Agronomy/ Horticulture/ Crop Science.
- Membership with professional society.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
