Job Description

Purpose of the Position
The Packhouse Manager reports directly to the general manager and is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and technical aspects related to the packhouse.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational requirements

Execute strategies to enhance daily operations and technical aspects on the packhouse.

Ensure efficient, safe and high-quality processing, packaging and distribution of fresh produce.

Identify areas for improvement and implement changes to increase efficiency, productivity and quality.

Ensure that all machinery, fridges, electrical and other equipment remain in good working order, by issuing job cards and follow up with the maintenance department.

Ensure the logistics are properly coordinated for timely and efficient delivery of produce to customers.

2. Administration and interdepartmental coordination / communication

Analyse the production programme in concert with the commercial manager and provide reports to management.

Analyse and improve weekly targets in concert with other relevant departments.

Ensure compliance with various quality programmes and upkeep of standards including FSSC.

Work closely with the sales and land departments to align production targets with sales target and programmes.

Ensure Non-Conformance Reports are completed.
2. Customer Relationship Management and quality management

Communicate with relevant stake holders and client in a professional can courteous manner.

Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, retailers, distributors, and bulk buyers, where applicable.

Handle customer complaints, returns, and service concerns professionally and efficiently in concert with the sales / commercial department.

Ensure successful customer onboarding and compliance with buyer requirements (quality, packaging, safety standards) as these relate to production.

Coordinate with relevant departments to ensure orders are packed according to customer specifications.

Ensure all deliveries meet quality, weight, packaging, and freshness standards.

Ensure orders are loaded correctly and dispatch to prevent delivery errors or product damage.

Liaise with customer technical teams.
3. General oversight and labour relations

Manage the production team’s performance and targets.

Coach, direct and train employees on best practices for production issues and handling daily tasks.

Manage daily production operations, including orders, dispatch planning, and delivery follow-ups.

Manage discipline and performance of subordinates in close concert with the HR department.

Ensure affective and productive labour relations amongst subordinates.
JOB SPECIFICATION
Qualifications and Experience
Education

Tertiary qualification in production, agriculture, or related field.

Certifications in FSSC (Food Safety System Certification) highly advantageous.
Experience

5 to 10 years’ experience in production management, preferably in:

Agriculture

Food production
o
FMCG
Key Skills and Competencies

Strong managerial and communication skills.

Knowledge of agricultural products, crop cycles, and packhouse operations.

Excellent customer service and relationship management.

Minimum Required Qualification:

  • Level 4: Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate) and National Cert level 4 Certificate GET Education, Training and Development
  • Recognised Winding Engine Driver certificate as issued by the DMR
  • Onsetter's Certificate

The Appointee should:

  • NQF 4 (National Senior Certificate / Grade 12 or equivalent)
  • Recognised Winding Engine Driver certificate as issued by the DMR.
  • Proof must be provided that certificate is still valid and WED has driven a winder in the last 2 years as an appointed WED.
  • Onsetter’s Certificate
  • At least 1-2 years’ experience as a Winding Engine Driver on AC and DC machines or have proof of Competence for newly qualified WED.
  • Medically fit to work in the specific business area
  • Clear security screening record
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable)

Additional Requirements:

  • 2-3 years’ experience as an Onsetter will be advantageous

Key Responsibilities:

  • Attendance & Competence Reliability • Adhere to working schedules which include overtime and standby. • Complete and pass assessments and medical screening as per schedules. Operational functionality • Physically operate the winding engine to hoist and lower men, materials and ore in the shaft in compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act and compliance to the SPG (Standards, Procedures and Guidelines • Identifying electrical and/or mechanical faults - limited • Identify operational problems and emergencies and act in accordance with specified requirements within area of responsibility • Operate winding engine • Assume responsibility for logbook • Be conversant with the Mine Health and Safety Act and any applicable Company or management instructions • Reset automatic hoist when trip-outs occur so as to ensure a minimum delay in hoisting time • Record conditions of winding engine daily and complete driver’s log book as required • List stoppages and callouts and reasons daily • Perform other tasks as allocated by the supervisor
  • Legal Compliance • Adhere to regulations and special instructions (site specific). • Identification and reporting of non-compliance incidents. • Identify hazards and take remedial measures to prevent accidents/ incidents in during winding operations. • Use signals in an appropriate manner. • Participate and assist during audits conducted on machinery. • Adhere to rules and regulations as set out in the MHS Act. • Adhere to any special instructions issued by the responsible engineer. Reporting & Administration • Report all incidents and/or accidents pertaining to the winder and/or shaft to the responsible Section Engineer. • Complete relevant documentation required.
  • Stakeholder Relations • Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and externally at all levels and cross-functionally. • Ensuring open communication channels with all relevant stakeholders. • Sourcing, contracting and negotiating with service providers. • Liaising with the necessary entities on any environmental management related requirements and alignment where applicable. • Collaborating with external service providers regarding the design and implementation of tools to enhance processes. Financial Management Cost Savings: • Leading and driving cost saving and cash conservation initiatives. • Remaining competitive on the global cost curve for surface operations. Building a values-based organisational culture • Actively support and meaningfully participate in the execution of the segment specific organisational development plan.
